He is so right about people knowing less about other cultures since the inception of the era of "globalization," which ought really to have been called corporate globalization, the imposition of Western businessmen's ideas, rules, and values on the world.
A great thought-provoking lecture. Perhaps greater familiarity with world history and literature would prevent some from confusing criticism of the XVI century Spain with criticism of Catholicism.
Tariq Ali comes off as lacking basic knowledge of history, economics and human nature. Al-Andalus was only tolerant to people who hate Western civilization and ignore writings from the entirety of its history rather than Muslim apologists. He continuously criticizes Western civilization; even Communism is portrayed as a victim. This whole lecture is envious Muslim whining about Western power and influence without any introspection about why the West became so powerful. It's implied this is solely due to imperialism which is ironic considering that imperialism is the sole reason Islam gained influence.
