Mirror is the film that made me give up studying film theory. After watching it, I was stunned, and felt that no academic way of thinking or analyzing can do justice to it. No amount of theory will explain its beauty.

I agree with you, at the end of the day, Mirror is not just a film, but a deeply personal experience shared by Tarkovsky directly with its audience. If I somehow attempted to make the film more understandable for the bewildered viewers, it was simply with the hope that they somehow may more easily connect with the artwork on a profound and personal level. Thank you for the interest.

It certainly made it to first place on my own personal greatest movie list! It's as though Tarkovsky wanted to express his own memories and dreams on screen that evokes a strong, emotional response in the way cinema can. Poetry is one of the most rawest mediums one can capture inner feelings, a hard thing to do with the camera without coming off as being silly, artsy and pretentious. What Tarkovsky achieved with Mirror is cinema at it's most rawest and most beautiful with no pretension or egotistical fluff. Everytime I watch this movie, and I really cannot stop watching it, I always get the deep feeling that the scenes were MY memories too.

My favourite film and yet it is not a film! It is a visual poem immersing the viewer in a journey of memories and flashbacks in a dreamlike form drifting back and forth through time. Tarkovsky shares his emotions and feelings inspired by formative scenes and events as he looks into a mirror reflecting his life. In your next part on the film's structure I hope you stress the non linear flow of time. I wonder if the sequence and form of versions created in the editing process gives any insight into how the non linearity developed? I like to think that it was intended from the outset and follows the nature of fleeting memories and dreams which come to our conscious thoughts and then fade or recede like the image in the masterfully poignant and sad final scene! Thank you for putting this part 1 context together and I am looking forward to the next part.
@PlanSéquenceFilmArt
@PlanSéquenceFilmArt 3 года назад
Thank you for your very eloquent input and your kind words. This is quite probably my favourite film as well. Like you, I would be inclined to assume the non-linearity had been established in his mind from the start and no doubt, the fact that the film was shot without a proper script and with Tarkovsky bringing new notes made for each scene everyday, certainly solidified its inevitable outcome. As you so aptly put it, it reflects the thought and remembrance process that happens on a cognitive and subconscious level. Cheers.
@gonzalovilla5195
@gonzalovilla5195 2 года назад
I can say that regarding the montage of film material and non-linear shots, they depended on their "inner state" as Tarkovksy said. Of the inner life of the film material. This was able to be put together into a proper unit because the fundamental idea was in the shots, in the rhythm of the shots. The non-linearity of time is actually the tension of time that passes in the shots. Perhaps the nature of memories and dreams is non-linear, and this may be reflected in the rhythm of the sequenced shots, but the fundamental idea is inherent in there, in the tension of the time fixed in the shots. This time passes despite editing and final assembly. I hope I made myself understood (my apologies for the mistakes, I don't speak English)

Indeed, it was a somewhat of an epopee and heroic triumph of artistic integrity, with short-term implication, but which paid-off in the long run, once the impoverished views on art from the "big shots" were washed away by the tides of time, and the unshackled, timeless understanding of the artwork came to light. Glad the video has helped you understand the context of the work's creation.

Don’t be fooled. In Russia they not only created what we know as modern editing, but they’re always paid for movies tobe made and funded new youth generations tobe creators as they know how important art is to the human spirit. The notion that they hated art is fabricated by our country the US to dehumanize them as robots

Hola Luis, muchas gracias, it's great that you've enjoyed this content. As for the "Lectures on Film Directing", those are a set of notes taken from Tarkovsky's lessons at the VGIK, I assume by a student of his. I've only come across portions of these lectures, translated by different people into English, but luckily for you especially, since you're Spanish, some of these have been translated and published in Spain by Errata Naturae, under the title "Atrapad la vida: Lecciones de cine para escultores del tiempo". I know also that Elías Querejeta Film School is working with the Tarkovsky Institution to promote and disseminate at least 90-hour recordings of film lessons by Tarkovsky, and its the only institution in Spain working in this project. Hope I have been helpful, compañero. Saludos de Portugal.

Cinema is fine art, not entertainment. It must be studied. Tarkovsky said or wrote that. Well it's true as far as my take upon watching the film. Your analysis here with explication of the somewhat tortured misgivings Tarkovsky himself experienced in making the film from earliest conception to numerous trial completions, demystifies the filmmaker's genius as I glimpse his clay feet. The hagiography I had felt now diminished. I grasped Stalker more readily, though a bit of critical retrospection by another film enthusiast aided that process with a few viewings. My mind associates the relationship of essential reality with actual existential reality of original experience of when we touched the pony or a tree, and now only experience metaphorically in the art of film. The filmmaker may see reality as subject one moment and as object alternately, or so I imagine. If we eat the same thing every day, it loses its taste from when we tasted it after not having had it for a long interval. And so it is with place and time, maybe, but I'm now talking more of my own experience than my understanding of Tarkovsky. The Cartesian revelation brought with it a new way of seeing life, but it has played out or is playing out. Western culture is decadent. With Tarkovsky one might glimpse through the mist, some Renaissance of a former civilization or a new revelation not fully birthed in the Carsonian epoch in which we already have lived since Rachel Carson was the prophet of in the post convolution period of two wars of the masses in revolt. Or so I think. Man [in the generic sense] the Good Husbandman, displacing the Cartesian man who gave us destructive and dangerous nuclear technology, and synthetic chemistry pollution of PFAS that will reside in the environment for a million years. What is this new revelation that also wields science in viewing scientific technology more circumspectfully, but goes back to or beyond to what? Tarkovsky's spiritual affinity for the natural world as a context for human life? I am I and my circumstances, wrote Ortega y Gasset, Spanish philosopher. Life among the fauna and flora Tarkovsky had such feeling for, against life in an urban cubicle of anonymous masses on laptops, controlled by mathematicians and computer engineers, functionaries for the financialist class.

Thank you for your thorough, personal and meaningful interaction, I have found much in common with your analysis of Tarkovsky's work and thought. Regardless of exposing Tarkovsky's path and history leading to his cinematic magnum opus, hopefully this analysis will have managed to provide you with a broader understanding of his persona and intellectual operation during the creative process, wihtout diminishing the value of his artistic output. Regards.

You said something like: people of the time this film was released were not prepered for this kind of film o something close to that. I am not trying to ofend you by contradicting you, but i dont think that statement is true, cause all i can see by today and modern audience, is that they dont have the patience to watch a more than 2 hours movies they get bored at and they cant really get to understand, today we are more used to more action, movement, less than 2 hours movies with a straight plot we can get. Hi Nya, first of all thanks for your appreciation. I understand what you mean and to a certain extent you are certainly correct. It is a fact that the attention span of people is growing thinner everyday, probably due to Instagram, TikTok and other social media rooted in short dopamine hits. My point however regarded the novel structure of the film and its poetic approach that transcends geographical and time barriers. In other words, as you yourself admitted, Zerkalo speaks to you in an undescribable way, there's something that inherently fascinates you. People today are more open to experimentation and inventiveness when it comes to cinema. Zerkalo is utterly unconventional and in that aspect, it was a shock at the time of its release. Nowadays, we have filmmakers like Terrence Malick or Carlos Reygadas for example, which employ similar stylistic aspects, and for people acquainted with them, Zerkalo will appear much more digestible than for everyday viewers of the 70's, despite the fact that they have not lived through WWII or didn't spend their childhood in rural Russia. Hope that clarified it and feel free to always comment, even if you disagree with me. I am not the owner of absolute reason and we all are bound to learn from other people, right until the day we cease to exist. Cheers!
