Programme Note:
If it is true that all continuous sounds can be deconstructed into combinations of sine waves, then theoretically any sound can be synthesised by a combination of sine waves. This idea, based on the theory of the 19th century mathematician Fourier, became feasible in the 20th century thanks to technological advances, and machines and computers were used to synthesise a wide range of sounds. These are synthesisers.
This work uses multiple sine waves to synthesise melodies rather than sounds. Sine waves can be described by circular motion (a single oscillation), and in this work a five-arc circle is imposed on the circular motion generated by the sine wave. This leads to a melodic line being derived from the sine wave. The idea is to construct a sequence of sounds on a time axis based on the concept of acoustic synthesis. Although I construct it, I cannot yet call it ‘composition’. The reason I don’t yet call this way of making a piece ‘composition’ is that I think it may constructure some aspect of ‘composition’, but not all of it. In that sense, this work is still at the ‘study’ stage.
When I listen to the melody made by the program that generates the melody lines of this work all day long, I dream that it may be possible to synthesise not only all the sounds in the world, but also music itself by multiplying simple waves. As seen from the field of image processing, where Fourier transforms of images and outlines are regularly done, this kind of dreaming may not be far off the mark.

Three Views of the Keyboard
2022 Concert Series, Concert 3
Date: 29 January 2023
Venue: Kyushu University, Faculty of Design, Acoustic Research Centre
Series Concept:
The piano: with its 52 white and 36 black keys, the piano continues to attract many musicians for its wide range and deep musicality. The "Three Views of the Keyboard" project is centred around the piano as an instrument and looks at the history, present, and future of cutting-edge keyboard music using acoustic, prepared, and electronic methods.
This series of concerts follows on from "Feldman meets freq", which took place in February 2022. Enjoy the music of outstanding composers and performers from the Kyushu University's Faculty of Design and from around the world. We will be very happy if you can see another side of the keyboard in a new light.
