I believe you would welcome the writings of Carl Jung. So many of your thoughts here were a concern of his. There is a book called Jung on Evil edited by Murray Stein whose introduction talks a lot about the existence of good and evil in all of us as well as the danger of projecting our unconscious evil onto our neighbors or strangers or countries, etc. Most of the book are the writings of Jung on the subject of evil. You will be amazed as his writings about this were so accurate but very controversial in the face of the collective opinions on this subject.
With literature training, it's difficult not to have some knowledge of psychology. so, yes, learnt this good and evil concept in literature courses. Thank you for your suggestion on further reading material. Will have a look at it.
