Oh! This exercise was so unique and interesting. A fabulous way to get out of a story rut and if at the very least help envision alternate scenarios. Sometimes I feel I get so stuck in my plot structure that the moment it starts to deviate, I become unsure and stagnate. I really like this website too! The descriptions are wonderful! I got the Death, Knight of Swords and Four of Pentacles! I will, for sure, be saving this site on my browser and using it the next time I feel stuck!!! THANK YOU for these wonderful ideas and videos you take the time to create and upload for us! I look forward to horoscopes!!!
Thanks J! Isn't that website the coolest? (I will say, though, having a real pack of cards is even better - they're so beautiful! :) Wow, that sounds like an awesome 3-card draw. Very curious to know what kind of story you'd write from that! And thank you for watching! 😄
I love this topic! I’m so glad to hear you touch on it. I’ve used tarot cards and horoscope charts to aid my writing for a few years now and I think they are invaluable tools that more writers need to know about! I recently made up a new spread idea that I like to cast before starting a new chapter. Maybe this will be helpful to other writers too :) I use two types of decks for this: regular tarot and Gypsy oracle cards. I first note down all the major characters who will play a big part in this particular chapter (usually it will be around 2 to 4 people) and I draw 1 tarot card for each of them. This will represent their overall roles over the entire chapter. Then below this pile I will cast a 5-card Cross Spread with my Gypsy oracle cards. This spread will give an overall view of the chapter’s dynamics. The middle card represents the present situation, the top card represents the past (maybe backstory directly affecting current events or simply what happened in the previous chapter), the bottom card represents the near future (usually the climax of the chapter), the card to the right of the center card represents the obstacles the protagonist will face, and the card to the left of the center card is an advice card (for writing purposes I imagine this to represent either a warning or suggestion the protagonist may receive or it could also mean a choice they have to make in the chapter’s conclusion). If you haven’t heard of Gypsy oracle cards before I highly recommend checking them out on amazon. They’re also great for gathering more insight having to do with relationships between people and showing the internal struggles or feelings of a person. I hope this will be helpful to someone and thanks again for the awesome video, Michelle. I’m looking forward to the next one :)
Oh wow, I love this so much! I hadn't heard of Gypsy oracle cards - I just looked them up and they're so beautiful! And your spread idea sounds AMAZING. Have you ever considered doing a video or livestream where you do readings for writers' characters?? I would be the first person to sign up for that!! 😃
Thank you! I’m glad you liked the idea! And I have not thought of doing a video about these things before... honestly I’m way too shy to do something like that 😂 But I’m happy to hear the idea is something people are interested in. Good luck with writing 😄
