In wet conditions a tarp can allow us to live outdoors rather than just survive. So using a tarp to create a dry area for the fire, cooking and the group to gather together.
NOTE: Before we leave the site the fire and earth around it is thoroughly doused in water and small holes poked into the ground to allow water to soak in. We test the resulting temperature by hand to ensure there are no hot spots and no chance of reigniting. Leaf debris is brushed over the area so the only markers are the trampled ground. Vegetation quickly reestablishes itself.
