Hey guys, pretty stoked to finally have uploaded this video. The first three pitches are my own design and I worked on them for a while. Using these pitches, I believe anyone could camp succesfully with a flat tarp. Please share and promote this video and spread the word! Thank you all my subscribers, really happy with you. You have inspired me to keep working on bad weather tarping. Your diagrams for the first four of these pitches are now in my little field book; the details of each pitch can get muddled in my head but your diagrams help so very very much. Can’t thank you enough! I bet I won’t come home so wet next time! All of your videos are well done and you are great at explaining things. Most of your tarp videos have been on repeat because they are the best out there.

Hey, i love the pitches you showed. Keep up the good work dude! If i could also add to something, about that pitch you did, the three sided pyramid one. I found the best success if using a 8x8 ft DD tarp. If you stake two loops in and fold it over itself, you create a nice half floor for your bivvy and the height is PERFECT for a standard trekking pole. So far it comfortably fits me, a 5 ft 5 inches tall man child and my 2 yr old son alongside my day pack. Just some insight, none the less i love your work. Ty for teaching all these useful pitches

+IntoTheForge, hi! Thanks for your comment, you're right, although I'd really like to try a cuben fibre tarp one time. But there is also this: If you learn these pyramid pitches and can work with them, a flat square tarp is an extremely good value alternative to a floorless pyramid tent, like the duomid, or the Luxe V4.

Well made and very instructional video - thank You! My take on awful weather tarping: Find a spot that is at least a bit protected and pitch/fly your tarp with as much ventilation as possible to prevent condensation & a damp sleeping bag. At least in the forest this works well for me. ATB Gereon
@papahiker9014
@papahiker9014 7 лет назад
+19ghost73 Thanks for your reply! I agree that picking the right spot is half the succes. I also like a lot of ventilation, but in wet and windy conditions I really enjoy full enclosure, so you get ventilation only from the perimeter gap. This is why the 3 ft tie outs are so effective. Kind regards, Papa hiker

Just got back from a weekend of sleeping on Dartmoor in gale force winds. Normally I stick to the Low Tetra pitch but this video had sold me on the idea of the Lengthwise Pyramid. Previously with the Low Tetra I'd found it to be less than ideal in stronger winds and space to be a bit tight (using only a single pole), so on my first night I tried the Lengthwise Pyramid with inverted V poles: complete nightmare! Those flaps on the side just created pockets that caught the wind and yanked the stakes out of the ground no matter what I did with them. I tried them outside as per your full length video on this pitch. It was slightly better, but still very flappy, and then the wind changed direction and I was back at square one. Most of the panels were too flappy no matter what I did and I got zero sleep. In less severe wind, and when you can be sure which direction the wind is going to come from, I could see it being a great pitch (it's very roomy) but in really severe or unpredictable weather I just don't rate it. When I got up in the morning I took the opportunity to also try out the Trapezoid Pyramid. It too struggled in the wind with each panel billowing in and out so much that it would have been impossible to sleep in. For comparison I then tried my usual go-to option: the Low Tetra. It was solid as a rock! So night two I knew the wind was going to be even worse due to where I was camping, and so I went with the Low Tetra with inverted V poles, took my time to get everything as tight as it could possibly be, and pitched it hard against the ground to prevent the wind getting under and lifting it. I also made a modification that I've never seen before: I used a length of paracord on the risers to make sure that the flap created by the excess tarp was held tight against the side of the pyramid, and to stop the head-end from billowing too much in the wind. (I've got photos and video, will upload when I get time). I spent the night thinking it was a failure since I got almost no sleep with the wind rattling the tarp, but it at least stayed put the whole night. A couple of times I had to reposition the walking poles, the force on them caused them to slowly splay over the night, but it's easy to put them back in place. When I got out in the morning I found I couldn't even stand up in the wind (at least a force 9, more likely force 10) and then I realised just how successful this pitch had actually been. Packing it back down in those winds was hell though. I actually lost a titanium stake, it quite literally blew away.
@papahiker9014
@papahiker9014 6 лет назад
Hey Matt,Wow what a story. Great work that you actually went out in such wind and took the time to report back about it. If an adult man can hardly stand up in wind we're talking gale force 9 at least! Those are not conditions in which many people would camp if they had a choice. In fact even Hilleberg states that at this wind force you should upgrade your tent from their red label to the black label range. So the fact that you spent the night in the low tetra, albeit loud and flappy in itself is a feat. I'm guessing you had all the perimeter tie-outs secured and the one big flap that the low tetra has on the outside with your paracord solution? Of these pitches, the low tetra is not my fave, but it's great to hear that it performed so well.Would like to see your video, also to see why the lengthwise pyramid did not work well. I like to stand behind my designs of course :-)I have been planning (for a very long time) to do a real time pitching video for some tarp sizes and pitches in very hard wind. Unfortunately, the right location, free time and windy circumstances have not yet happened at the same time...I did do the lengthwise pyramid in wind force 6 two times and had succes with it, BUT, it did require careful pitching and a lot of stakes. I staked down all 12 perimeter points and the two guylines. Also I staked the flaps away from the wind to create the arrow shape. You need to stake them more down than out to create a lot of tension on them. One of the two I rolled up and then staked away from the wind. This all helps with flapping and stability. But, because it also immobilizes the tarp cloth, this leads to more pressure on the pole. So, happy I had doubled up the pole.The trapezoid is less wind stable than the lengthwise. It helps that it has a handy lifter point in the middle of the largest panel though.Thanks for the reply, keep the reports coming and great that you did this.Kind regards Papa hiker
@lowemasterpro
@lowemasterpro 6 лет назад
Hi P.H.! > I'm guessing you had all the perimeter tie-outs secured and the one big flap that the low tetra has on the outside with your paracord solution? Yes absolutely EVERYTHING was staked down. I'm pretty sure I'd have been retrieving my tarp from the next tor in the morning if I'd not staked everything! :) The big flap was on the outside and, thinking about it, I suspect I was somewhat lucky in that I had (intentionally) pitched the tarp with the flap pointed away from the wind, and the wind direction hadn't reversed during the night (I've had that happen a few times on Dartmoor). I get the feeling it might not have done so well if the wind had come from the other direction, even with my paracord solution. > Would like to see your video, also to see why the lengthwise pyramid did not work well I'll definitely get the Low Tetra video up some time soon (just busy with work at the moment). Unfortunately I didn't video the Lengthwise Pyramid so can't share that one. At some point, probably in lighter weather, I'll try it again, because it definitely gave a nice roomy pitch. I also wonder whether I perhaps could have got the setup tighter. I don't want to completely write off a configuration after only one attempt. The Hexamid looks really good too, but looks like a lot more work to get the setup right, which wouldn't be ideal when getting set up on a windy hillside. > because it also immobilizes the tarp cloth, this leads to more pressure on the pole. So, happy I had doubled up the pole I know what you mean. I suspect the Low Tetra wouldn't have survived with only one pole. Having two poles reduces the individual forces, but I think it's also better for the tarp as it increases the surface area in contact between pole and tarp. When I got up in the morning I found that both poles had been forced wider than I'd originally placed them with a long scratch mark in the grass where they'd been slowly slipping in the night, such were the forces on them. > I have been planning … to do a real time pitching video … Unfortunately, the right location, free time and windy circumstances have not yet happened at the same time Get to Dartmoor. It's almost always windy! 😂

I kind of LIKE that low star pitch. Looks quite stealthy!

This video should be the new religion and cult of #tarpcamping. Most awesome tarp video ever on youtube. Thank you for saving the earth!

Firstly, thanks for all the incredibly useful information. It really helps. Could you suggest a tarp form that I could use with an 84-inch (or 213cm) bivy?

very nice video and very good information with the diagrams. might i suggest that you look into the tarps from wilderness innovation. they have a fantastic option for the "tent pole" and are far superior in design and quality than any other tarp i have used.

Hi Papa Hiker, Thanks for awesome videos. Learned a lot. A question: would be possible to do lengthwise pyramid setup as in your video with 3×2.4 m tarp Rab Siltarp2? And if so, what kind of modification to your original design I would have to do? Thanks a lot for helping. Cheers....

Maybe a silly tip that most experienced people already know but since I always carry my poncho with me, which is made of the same material as my tarp I use that as a ground sheet. No extra weight since I already carry it anyway :)
