I used to think the fruit stripes were due to developers speeding up loading times by abusing system memory that just so happened to be mapped for graphics, but apparently it was the developers doing it intentionally as an easy and fast assembly-code way of indicating to the user that "yep data is still loading". Games with still loading screens could freeze for IO problems; and you, the player, would be none the wiser that there was any problem until you decided to give up after waiting over half an hour. (A proper modern progress bar as millennials know it today would have probably taken too many valuable CPU cycles compared to simply spamming color codes with each data read.)

Cassettes load slow by nature. Yes, early computers could use cassettes to store data, same principle as a dial-up modem! Their low sound quality, though, forced data rates to be rather low. The C64 is pretty high-end compared to most cassette-capable micros, with 64K of RAM, so their cassette games can be especially large. Obviously, it didn't take too long for disk drives to become the primary storage format for that system. As for the flashing, that's done as a simple way to let the user know that it's still successfully loading in. Many other computers would also forward the cassette drive's audio output to the speakers as well, just in case your ears felt left out.

This was one of the group matches in Kusogrande this year and let me tell you it plays even worse than it looks. I think only two people ever made it to the second stage in an hour. And the controls change every single time there's a new minigame. The music slaps though, it's the only redeeming feature.
