Areas include the rooftops of Gotham City, Max Shreck's department store, the Red Triangle Circus and the sewers. Besides run-and-jump action, there's also a lot of combat in the game, as many of the Penguin's henchmen stand in Batman's way. He can knock them out with punches and kicks and a number of extra weapons stored in his utility belt. These include batarangs, which come in standard and self-seeking varieties, and smoke bombs that stun enemies for a while. In addition, Batman can shoot from his grappling gun and unleash a deadly swarm of bats towards enemies. All of these weapons have limited ammo, however, that must be collected.

Actually this is The bad ending, when you beat Catwoman she fells from the roof and get eaten by cats.

I have so many questions, especially since I played this all the time as a kid. I think my first question is how possible some of this stuff is without the tool-assistance, in terms of moving Batman around. I don't remember the controls being particularly responsive but maybe I just had bad reflexes. Also, I did not realise how powerful jumping was, you absolutely cheesed the chase portion of the second Penguin fight, a segment that was always a run killer for me as a kid. The other big thing that caught my attention was in the store part of Act 2, are the knife throwers set to only become active if you walk on the floor? It isn't mentioned in the Author's Comments in the source but it can't be a glitch. I'm gonna dig around for my console and see if I still have this, I'm really curious now after watching this run

The controls in the game are actually way more responsive than most people think. The problem is that Batman just doesn't react the way you'd think. The jumping constantly moves him way faster than just walking. Also, many of the enemies can be either manipulated by where you stand or how fast you scroll the screen. For example: The knife throwers in Act 2 are dependent on where you're standing. By jumping over their triggers they won't come down to attack you. Another thing that isn't mentioned is that you can cancel Batman's attacks by jumping. The catch is that even though the animation is cancelled, the attack itself isn't. This allows you to keep jumping forwards while still attacking enemies. As mentioned before, if you can scroll the screen fast enough, certain enemies/obstacles can be de-spawned. The game can only handle a certain amount of enemies on screen. If you move fast enough, enemies behind you will be de-spawned to allow for newer objects (powerups etc) to properly spawn. A great example is Act 3. If you move fast enough, the constant barrage of enemies will not spawn because the flipping clowns will prevent newer enemies from spawning. @@honorablejay well that's really cool to see that a lot of these tricks can be executed without tool assistance. This was one of the only Genesis games I couldn't beat (well, one of the others being Fantasia but I think I'll just leave that one alone) and now I have some inspiration to give it another go!

Do you see how the time in the title of the video is 9:30,but the video itself is 11:51? That's because 9:30 is the last time he pressed any button. And i believe that the ending is an "interactive ending" when you can still play, but doesn't affect the game.

@@lan44444 old comment but yes, there are technically two endings and it depends on who wins the fight. The "good" ending means Batman wins and Catwoman falls to the ground, a bunch of cats show up and then her body disappears. Did the cats eat her? Who knows

That often comes down to the player deciding on what is more consistent or optimal. Even if the grapple gives you slightly higher move speed when it is used, it does prevent any movement until it has completed its animation cycle, which depends on how far away from the target you are, as well as stopping movement entirely for the time it travels to the target. It has diminishing returns on movement the further you are from the target.
