Lunar Ball, known as Lunar Pool in the US, is, as the name suggests, a pool game for the NES with the curious ability to adjust the friction of the surface of the pool table. Indeed, it is quite possible to play with no friction, and while this may sound easy, it actually proves to be impossibly difficult due to removing the major obstacle from the balls just continuing to roll forever, causing the game to never end.
With some heavy support from a bot (and massive loss of sanity), the author manages the nigh-impossible feat of making it all the way to the end of all 60 tables even in the face of this overwhelming opposition.
Reading the submission notes ( tasvideos.org/... ) is highly advisable to explain some of the oddities such as the occasional pocketing of the cue ball. (In short: The cue ball is deliberately pocketed in order to avoid getting a perfect score on every level because the point counter would take unbearably long to tick all the points, up to a half minute per level.)

I remember when he started this TAS and had a Lua script running all the possibilities trying to get the best options. It didn’t take 3 days to chug through per board like his regular TAS, but dealing with so many shots that could cause softlocks from an infinite loops was too interest not to follow. This was a thing of beauty we celebrated, and I’m so happy to see it here. Just... if only he could’ve VANQUISHED some balls like the other TAS.

Can you explain why the many scratches? Do they allow a more optimal cue placement?

@@tiyenin The author explains it in his submission notes. Without the scratches, the "rate" continually goes up to a maximum of 99, and the player gets huge amounts of points per board. Since the game is so slow to tally points, the TAS would be mostly just watching the points counter tick up. By intentionally scratching every once in a while, he resets the rate and reduces the points scored (and thus the time needed to tally them).

Man I loved this game many years ago. I owned (well still own somewhere in my shelves) a pirate multigame NES cartridge which had this game (called Lunar Ball) and I remember playing with the no friction mode, shoot balls with faith it would never get caught in a hole before all the other ones lol Simple but fun games of pool for sure

before watching this i'm gonna say "i can't fathom how much save-load state the TAS-er used for this run". knowing which one will work is already insane amount but taken it to 'entertainment' level is must be mind boggling. hats up for the author

On the original game the. cue ball will keep going till you scratch. After all it is zero friction which makes it pointless to play like that unless you do it for a goof.

I had thought that the intentional pocketing was to leave the ball in a better subpixel position or respawn point but no, it's similar as to why Sonic speedruns are timed with in-game time, the points just take so long to count up if you go too perfectly

I really loved this Tas, but I never understood why the need of loosing a ball in some of the levels, but in others get a perfect table score. Please if someone could answer this would be really nice.

Haha I played this on a bootleg multi cart must've been 1992. Still remember the music and sfx so well. Loved messing with the friction although I didn't know what that was then.

Я очень долго в детстве играл в эту игру. Так что мне сразу бросилось в глаза разные уровни инерции от раунда к раунду. TAS это хорошо.. Но раз уж это TAS - хотелось бы увидеть ровный уровень торможентя шара во всех уровнях, и отсутствие ударов специально в лузу. Спасибо.

Ну раз игра даёт возможность убрать торможение шаров, то почему нет? Разве тас и спидран это не разные вещи? Мне кажется это на спидране должна стоять нормальная энерция шаров а тас может быть любым главное что б игру пройти, ведь в тасах используют часто баги и сторонние средства и манипуляции с игрой и тд 🤔

@@saddemon3913 Я не против нулевого торможения.. И TAS на то и TAS что бы всё сделать максимально быстро.. Но, если мне не изменяет память, игра запускается с одними параметрами окружения, которые в процессе не меняются.. А в этом ролике есть фрагменты как с нулевым торможением, так и с режимом в котором торможение есть.. вот за это мой взгляд и зацепился, а в остальном - отличная работа! я с удовольствием посмотрел.

@@saddemon3913 думаю, проигрывал он для того, чтоб быстрее пройти. Когда без потерь проходишь уровень, секунды 3 надпись "perfect" висит, а забить "свояка" чуть быстрее выходит. Хотя, при этом некоторые удары были очень медленные, так что хз, может, просто баловство.

なんか、連続成功させていくと画面上のRATEが上がりスコアが倍増していくらしい。ただ、スコアが上がりすぎるとスコアが加算される時間が伸びる(ポンッとまとめて加算じゃなく、10ずつジャララララ〜っと加算される)。そこで、全体のクリアタイム短縮のために、わざと失敗する場所を決めてRATEをリセットすることで、スコア上昇を抑えているらしい。 例えば、そのままだとスコア加算に5秒かかるが、わざと死ぬのに2秒かかってもスコアリセットで加算が2秒で済むなら合計4秒になり1秒短縮になるって感じ(実際にはフレーム単位での短縮だと思われ)。

It prevents the PERFECT message/jingle popping up giving bonus points along with resetting the RATE (which awards bonus points for chaining together successful shots). And the combination of both of those takes time. So if you can save more frames by blowing a perfect than being perfect well you do it to go fast!

So why does the runner sometimes intentionally pocket the cue ball? Does it do something to help line up a shot?

My guess is because the score multiplier will be so high that it will actually take more time to get all those points. Pocketing the cue once in a while will mess up the score multiplier. You can see RATE in the top middle of the screen go back to 1 every time the cue is pocketed.

Why the cue ball sometimes stop when it hit another ball, and another ball do not move? Aren't they absolute elastic?

It all depends on the impact of the cue ball on the others, it depends a lot on how the cue ball hits the other balls, that is why sometimes some balls do not move or come out with a higher speed than the cue ball had, that in a real table usually happens

It's explained in the submission text: tasvideos.org/2609S "In Lunar Ball, each successful shot increases the "RATE" value of the player; each unsuccessful shot resets it. The higher the "RATE" value, the more points the player is awarded for the next successful shot. Points are awarded at a rate of 10 points per frame. The RATE value maxes at 99, at which point completing a single 6-ball board gives 20790 points ((6+5+4+3+2+1)*99*10), plus the PERFECT bonus. Tallying that amount takes more than half a minute. Because nobody wants to watch 15 minutes of score tallying, it is a good idea to reset the RATE value every once in a while. However, because this game mode is frictionless, the only possible method that a finite shot can be unsuccessful, is when it shoots the cue ball into a pocket. This I call "suicide", and this movie features that action every once in a while, and it is completely intentional for the aforementioned reason."
