DPs produce powerful realistic electronic drum tracks if good techniques are used. Drum tracks can easily get muddy during mixdown. This is because they are often deemed “Final” even before final mixdown. As a result, drum tracks can be left sounding flat or dead in a mix. Watch this video now to find out how to avoid DDMT(Dead Drum Machine Tracks) and keep that beat alive and kickin’! DP-MIDI model drum recording process starts at 1:57. DP-SD model drum recording process starts at 7:31. #RecordingDrums #RecordingDrumMachines #RecordingElectronicDrums

Whether you play an electronic kit or program a drum machine on your tracks, a common goal is that they sound good and make your music come alive. Electronic Drums can provide a false sense of security because they can sound finished with little to no effort. However, this may not always translate well with your tracks during mix down because drums can get clouded and muddy fast during a production. I wanted to share some practices to help avoid common pitfalls in this area using the DP-24. I hope this presentation serves useful.

I am awaiting the delivery of my DP-24 SD as I pondered this fascinating tutorial. As it happens, I also have the Alesis SR 18. Which of course means that I found this video very intuitive and valuable. I consider myself an accomplished musician on guitar, saxophone and; to a lesser degree, keyboard. I have the Yamaha MX88 and PSR e473 with a korg 61 key work station also. So, well on the way to making a decent fist of production. Videos like this are essential for people like myself who want to experience the delights of music writing, and production. I have obviously subscribed, liked, and looking forward to watching more of your valuable contributions to the world of home recording.

For some reason, when using midi clock out with my Akai MPC, it will sync, but when you hit record on the DP-32, it starts recording over the sequence on my MPC. Worked great on my Tascam DP-01, but not on the DP-32. The only workaround is to select a sequence that isn't being used, so when the DP-32 triggers the record button on the MPC, it doesn't record over my drum sequence being used. And remember to turn the click OFF on the drum machine.

I'll never understand why Tascam's newest DP machines no longer have MIDI jacks on them. I have a DP-006 and I have no choice but to commit a (precious) track to drums at the outset of a recording session. While I know it's the smallest (ie; cheapest) of the DP machines, moving up won't get me MIDI, just more tracks. I live in the hope that perhaps Tascam will fill the gap between the DP-03SD and the DP-24SD, with a DP-12/16SD that includes MIDI (sigh...). Or, maybe we could twist the respective arms of Yamaha and Fostex to get back into the PortaStudio arena...

What kind of cable are you running from drums to tascam? When I plug my Roland TD-1 module into my DP24 my floor Tom pad is super quiet. When I plug headphones directly into my Roland drums everything works perfect? 🤔 must be a cable problem?

I am using the DP-24 (original) with an MPC 2000XL (8 output outputs) when i track out the drums to the DP-24- im hearing the sounds bleeding from one channel to another- could this be the snake cable im using? (It shouldn’t be bc i just bought them new) the other idea is maybe the 8 outs board is bad or faulty… ive had this DP-24 for years now but had always been conflicted about using this vs the Reaper DAW… i also have a Soundcraft Signature 22MTK - but ive decided to use that as the final stop before recording everything into the DAW. This way the DP-24 can record my ideas and then flesh them completely out and create an official finished version of my beats

I'm a songwriter considering one of the Tascams. I'm looking for advice on tracking to a click track. Does the recorder have any click built in or do I need some form of external drum machine to play my click sound? I'd prefer something other than the usual boring click sound but I'm also not good at programming typical drum machines. I've used Garageband to drag out a loop and track to that which is really nice and easy. Any advice? Seems odd Tascam removed the midi I/O from the newer models too...

In the presentation, breaking drum parts into separate tracks is a suggestion for more control and flexibility in your percussion tracks, not a must. You don’t have to work that way if you don’t want or require it. Recording drums to just on track is fine if that works for your production. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿

The unit doe not have a speed/pitch control. However, if you export the track to your PC and use a software application like "Audacity", you can change the pitch and speed. To do this, you must navigate to the “PANNING” page. Each pad can be assigned to one of seven positions within the stereo spectrum. To change a pad’s panning position: 1. Select the sound set which you would like to edit by pressing DRUM, PERC or BASS. Please note that the Panning setting will affect all Bass sounds similarly. In other words, changing one Bass pad’s Panning setting will affect all the other Bass sounds in the Drum Set. 2. Press the pad. The display will show the pad number and the pad’s panning position on the top line. 3. Enter the desired pan position, from full left to full right, using the number keypad, INC/DEC buttons or VALUE dial. The seven available pan positions correspond to the number buttons shown in parenthesis: hard left (1), soft left (2), left of center (3), center (4), right of center (5), soft right (6), and hard right (7). The display will show when panning position is center. We know that the SR18 has two pairs of stereo outputs. Drum sounds can be assigned to either pair of outputs and be placed anywhere within the stereo field of the assigned outputs via the pan function. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

Great video, I have a DR 880 drum machine, with only a single stereo output... The method that you outlined does not appear to work for me. Another method that I have been researching is to use a program such as EZdrummer2 , using this program I could record each individual drum and download each drum to a WAV file and then import it into the different tracks. A potential problem that I see is syncing the individual WAV files, I don’t know if that would be a problem or not... do you have any insight into this method?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 года назад
Syncing shouldn't be a problem if your using MTC or SMPTE when recording your drum tracks outside of the DP and syncing to that unit. That's why the import feature is important here. It's one way many folks are able to collaborate using different systems and units. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿

Thanks for the comment... I got my DP32sd yesterday and tried an experiment... I programmed a drum track in EZDrummer2, converted it to a 16bit stereo WAV file and transferred it to the DP32 through the Audio Depot folder. I loaded the file onto Track 9/10 and it came right up in the monitors... I then opened the metronome and set the DP to measures. Then I did a playback, it appears that I am sync’d right up... the measures run true with playback.. Know this was only a 72 measure song, but the beats were right on, as far as I could tell..

@PowercoatMusic 3 года назад
You know there are several processes that you can use and the fun is finding out which one works best for you. We also know that live drum recording requires a good plan. I don’t like to bounce unless absolutely necessary, so first I suggest you determine how many final drum tracks you need (snare, bass drum, toms, ect). Then I suggest mixing the tracks on the DP-32 down to the DP-24 according to your final drum track list. If you still need to bounce after that then so be it. Let me know what you end up doing?
