Tascam DR-40 Noise Due Radio Frequency Interference

If you've heard noise similar to this in your recordings, it could be due to radio frequency interference (RFI) from other electronic sources like cell phones, lights, TV's, computers, etc. The exact sound of the noise may vary depending on the interfering source. I demonstrate this with my Samsung Galaxy S5. Unfortunately, I now have to re-shoot my video with my phone OFF or at least significantly farther away from my Tascam!
Unfortunately, the DR-40 (an otherwise great device) has inadequate RFI rejection.
Note to Tascam... I happen to specialize in this area of electrical engineering, so if you would like advice on how to fix this in your design, I'd be happy to help.

Thanks! I couldn't figure out where that noise was coming from. I thought it was the pot/jack or maybe my cable quality. Radio interference makes much more sense.

I have the TASCAM DR-40X and if I receive or make a call from my iPhone 6S+ the TASCAM's condenser microphone picks up the notorious GSM interference buzz.

OMG, I'm so grateful for this video. I thought I was insane. It's not wireless why would there be interference?

I'm glad it was helpful. It took few occasions of finding those glitchy sounds in my audio to realize something must be going on. Basically, a device doesn't have to be a "wireless" device to be affected by stray electromagnetic interference.

I have the same issue with my zoom h4n and my Samsung galaxy. Trying to figure it out. Someone suggested Ferrite cores and others suggested airplane mode

If you have to have a phone near your recorder, test it by going in and out of airplane mode. Your phone will ping the towers when it comes out and you'll hear the noise if your phone is too close. Across the room may be far enough away. I actually heard this exact noise on a Radiolab podcast yesterday, so it's definitely something people should be aware of.

oh maaan i was goin' to buy a tascam dr 07 but i have found that all the tascams has the same issue :'(, can u suggest some portable recorders that has " AB " ?, i wish zoom has it, love to record nature forests but with that radio thing, it will be .........

Yeah, mine is abysmal when it’s near even the slightest interference. Makes recording indoors a lot of places impossible

Alot of tascams are including this and we need a radio frequency bubble thing that removes it

I feel your pain! Did you ever find a solution, aside from asking everyone in the vicinity to switch their phones into airplane mode? It’s maddening.

At what distance does the noise cease? I plan to use one of these with contact mics to record electrical equipment so am wondering if I should just get a Zoom H1n

I can't remember exactly. It may have been just a few feet. I think it would be dependant on the interfering electronics and possibly the gain on the mic. You would have to experiment.
