I have heard both, I own a Zoom H4n pro and I recorded music into it, then we made the test with the TascamDr 60. Guys, the preamps of the Tascam are on another level! The bass frequencies are detailed, a lot of headroom. I decided I have to buy the Tascam for musical recording and keep the zoom for the two little stero mics included

That useful, came here looking at these as I'm thinking of trading in my H5 for a DR60 so I can more easily use it for VO and as a desktop interface. Any thoughts?

Just getting in the game. Considered the DR70D for obvious reasons, but thought (especially after seeing the price) that this unit may be the way to go since I'm just learning anyway. This video was mega helpful! I don't subscribe to many folks, but you earned this one! Thank you, sir!

Don't forget the MICROPHONE , reflects the quality of your sound, more so than the recorder. Granted, there is better quality digital recorders, but a crappy mic will still sound crappy on this nice unit. The unit is NOT the answer-all to crappy sound. The answer, is to use quality mics. Doesn't have to be a 1k mic. I use NTG2 (200.00) with Zoom H1 and Zoom H2. Very good sound. Just picked up one of these so hoping to improve my quality just a slight bit more. One of my go to mics is an old Radio Shack that I got off ebay for $8.00. So it PAYS to research and get good mics first, then a nice unit like this when you get proficient.I had the H4n in my cart, but switched to this. Don't need on board mics, have plenty good ones to plug in. Nice video my man. Well done.

what kind of mic is the old $8 mic you found on ebay?

33-1070B is the Radio Shack part#. In my research, it was made by Shure for Radio Shack. Google it. They are on Ebay these days for $30-40. Still worth every penny. Great for interviews and it just plain sounds good.

Nice review of the DR60MKII. I bought one recently and concur with you, for the price it's really good. About the only thing I need to get a feel for is the levels going from the unit to my Canon D60. The files which recorded to the DR60MKII sounded fine, but the ones from the camera were too loud, so I need to fiddle with the level on the D60 I believe.

This is a splendid review!!! I was guessing between this item and the Zoom H4NPro, but seems to me the Tascam is a winner.

I like that you get right to business and keep things moving. It looked like you continued to use your external mic to an input on the Zoom H4N which kept it fair. What was the mic setup you used?

Great review. Fast and no-nonsense. I am also experiencing rather quiet inputs right out of the box. Gear used: XLR cable to input 1, new Rode NTG-4 microphone. I set the gain to Mid, put it about 2 feet away from the speaker and still the input was way way below -12 DB.... Is this normal? Suggestions? Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out how to connect Tascam to the dslr camera and use Rode 3.5mm or xlr mic while recording video. You talk about it at 1min into your video. I'm not sure what connects to what and what does it do.

Hi Cameron, do you recommend the DR60D MkII for sound design and quiet recordings/ambient recording? I have heard that it has a digital stepping issue when decreasing the potentiometer and that it is then, not good for such purpose.

Hello, Great video! I was wondering if you could also use this recorder as a stand alone recorder to capture instruments? I have used the zoom before to do some home recording in conjunction with a nice condenser mic. Based off your video it seems the DR-60D might be better all around. I do have a DSLR and would also use it when shooting video, I just want something that I can use for anything sound. Thanks for your time, the video was extremely helpful!!

+Jeremy Burge if you have a microphone you can plug it in record just using the Dr 60D ii no need for a camera

so you can just connect it into the camera and it will automatically sync the sound in camera without syncing it in post

+greg goodman yep when recording direct to camera turn the in camera sound down to 1click from no sound to get the signal noise on the transfer to be as low as possible

You can hook it to the camera, but for optimal sound you have to sync it later!

Great video. I'm new to audio and video. I need to do some two-person interviews. I have one camera (Canon 7D). I would like to get good audio from both people. How would that work with something like the Tascam audio recorder? What type of mics would I need, how does the audio from both mics get recorded into the Tascam? And are there ever problems with the audio not syncing with the video afterwards? Sorry for all the questions! I'm need to do some quick research and I came across your video. Thanks!
@CameronGallagher

Russ Tanner Adobe Premier does automatic syncing which is awesome and so does plural eyes but usually it is pretty simple! You just record both and sync in post.
