Yeah, I find that Japanese snacks are sort of hit-or-miss. Some are, like, SOOOO good, like Umaibo and a lot of mochi flavors, but then there's some that are just downright nasty. There's this spot in my hometown called Fat Panda, which is a boba tea shop and convenience store, and my favorite snack to get from there is Calbee's takoyaki balls.
Despite how prevalent it is in Japan, there's a reason it hasn't really taken off in 'murica: Pocky is ridiculously bland and has very little flavor, compared to the usual flavors people eat.
