"We are earning around ₹2 lakhs per month, which helps us manage our household expenses, create our own identity, and progress significantly." - Chandrakanti Jena, member of Subarna Soheli SHG, Balasore, Odisha.
Practiced in Pipli, Odisha, the 60 women of the Subarna Soheli SHG are keeping the art and craft of appliqué alive. They are using the appliqué work as a decorative technique for handbags, pillowcases, lamp shades, Lord Jagannath frame bindings, bread baskets, and more.
Each member makes between ₹4,000 and ₹5,000 every month.
Their craftsmanship not only sustains this tradition but also gives them livelihoods and a deep sense of pride in their cultural roots.
This initiative under the Gender & Community programme aims to empower rural artisans by giving them a platform for growth and prosperity through the 18 operational SHGs. The initiative generated an astounding ₹29,00,000 in FY 23-24.
On National Handloom Day, let’s honour the invaluable artisans and their contribution to preserving these timeless artistic creations!
