“We used to face a huge water problem here, which made farming difficult for us. Earlier, when we used to grow rice, even getting two meals a day was difficult,” says Hemalata Mahanta, a farmer from Badhena, Odisha.
Small and marginalised farmers like Hemalata have long struggled with challenges such as erratic rainfalls, water shortages, low yields, and inconsistent income. Traditional farming methods often fail to provide the resilience needed to overcome these hurdles.
Adoption of improved technologies such as the Pond-Based Integrated Farming System (IFS) provides an innovative solution to these challenges. It combines fish farming, crop cultivation, and livestock rearing, all in one place.
By utilising available land and water resources more efficiently, farmers get multiple sources of income and improved employment opportunities, making farming economically viable.
