I loved everything about this video but the fact that you added subtitles over every word is insane to me. (Also love how you have so much to talk about in this video and manage to segue between everything seamlessly)
thank you!!!! Since you liked this video, I really hope you also check out a new video I just made: a 2 hour long video that also talks about absurdism and expands on a lot of topics I introduced in this tatami video....except it's about Squidward from SpongeBob!!!! If you like SpongeBob, please watch my latest video!! I'm really glad people like you can find my videos, and I hope more do!! Thanks!!
Dude holy shit this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. How does this have so little views and how do you have so little subscribers? This is Godlike. The amount of effort and talent this must've took. And about my favorite anime too. Mannnn you're so underated
thank you for your very nice comment 🥹 I loved making long form essays like this and am really glad when they reach people like you!! I’m making different types of content nowadays, but when I grow my channel large enough, I’ll make long form essays like this again!!
best video I've saw on the anime, it is just amazing: you managed to talk about every storyline while explaining what's important in them, while staying in the aesthetic of the show with great montage and giving us a fantastic ending that got me the chills, congratulations man
Thank you!!!! That comment really means a lot!! If you wanna see another high effort video I made... I just made a giant 2 hour video about Squidward from SpongeBob!!! And I think the ending is also really cool hehe Thanks for watching, and again for commenting!!
i can't believe i only found this video now! and at such a time too, as i'm currently once again dealing with being inside my own "tatami galaxy" haha i've loved this anime since forever man, it's probably my top 1 of all time, and to see someone talking about it with such passion, and exploring its themes so well, moved me greatly. i don't know if you still check the comments of this 2-year-old video but if you do, just know you earned a new sub :)
Thanks for watching!! I hope things are going better for you now! I'm glad you were able to find this video--and yes, I do periodically check the comments of 2 year old videos!! Mostly because I just finished another video I hope you might like! It's 2 hours long and also about absurdism...and it's about Squidward from SpongeBob!! Please check it out if that sounds interesting to you!
Fantastic video, reeeeally well done! I'm very surprised that it doesn't have more views, but I guess people just don't talk about this show anymore, it is kind of old to be fair. I just finished the show yesterday and man.. it truly is something special. I've never been able to relate to a character so much. I basically am in his exact situation, I'm in my second year of university right now and I feel just like he did. I've been dealing with depression for a few years now and it does not seem to get any better, but him actually getting together with Akashi genuinely gave me hope that I can break out of this vivious cycle eventually. Every episode was great, but I specifially loved the last episode, I'm not one to cry a lot, but I teared up when he did make the move on Akashi in the last episode and seeing how happy she was about it, like she has been waiting for this moment for a very long time. Maybe I'll be in this situation as well someday, it would be nice to finally be happy in life, I can only dream how that must feel. But yeah, everything about this show is so unique, the story, the characters, the artstyle and so on. It resonated with me like no other anime ever has, just because I could perfectly associate myself with Watashi. Him not having an actual name makes it way easier to be honest and I really like that, another great aspect of this show. Also, shoutout to Trash Taste, they mentioned The Tatami Galaxy a few times on the podcast and it basically is the whole reason how I even heard of it and why I started watching it. I'm soo thankful for that
do you like moths??? Also thanks!! I'm glad you liked it! Since you liked this video, I'd really appreciate it if you checked out another video I put a ton of effort into that I just finished that is also about absurdism...and it's about Squidward! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zq4AZarwDqg.html
love the video! the tatami galaxy is my favorite show of all time, and I gotta say the writing, editing, and depth you went into in this video absolutely do it justice. definitely one of the best videos I’ve seen on the show
I'm not sure if I like Tatami Galaxy or HBO's The Wire more, but by god, Tatami Galaxy has the better ending. Everything comes together so perfectly, with so much poignancy, it is simply a marvel to witness.
Damn, awesome video! There is not enough long-form analysis videos on The Tatami Galaxy so it is great to see one so well put together with interesting ideas that I hadn’t thought of before (like the moth sort of representing how Watashi sees himself). Keep up the good work!
I visited the dormitory where this anime was set in, it was worse than what the anime portrayed, but at the same time it was very wonderful. If you ever get the chance to visit it before it's going to be demolished ( there is an ongoing law suit between the students and the university) you should visit it, it's pretty close from Kawaramachi Station ( one of the central station in Kyoto ) . In the website it's said if you talk to one of the students they will guide you through the dormitory, but when we went there none of the students lived there guided us, but you can stroll in the building freely they said. At the end we got to talk to one of the students who lived in the other newer dormitory and he kindly explained the building to us. It reeked of old meiji buildin (specially the toilet, it is a shared men and women bathroom, probably no one used it ) but also because of its age, it you can feel the history, the comradery between the students through history, definitely must check this place if you loved this anime, also if you'd like to ask more of my experience visiting there more you can ask me anything !
Very interesting!!! Im actually visiting Kyoto this March. Not sure yet if I’ll have flexibility to stop by Kyoto University since im going with other people…but it is on my bucket list to visit Kyoto and the university area during the summer and see gozan at some point!
I wanna talk more about the place! I absolutely love the anime and I've seen it 4 or 5 times xD. I don't think I'll be able to visit the dormitory anytime soon before it gets demolished. Mind telling me more? You on discord?
@@actuallyarjun the place is called Kyoto University Yoshida Residence some students will give you a tour of the place but most of them doesnt give fuck hahaha, they're still debating for it to get demolished but what I saw was most of the upper levels were empty and in ruins but there were still people living there
@jerryboazt96 ooo and and a doubt off topic. Having seen the anime multiple times, there is this random dog barking sound that plays in the background now and then during the nights. I know it is a pretty common thing but I love those muffled barking sounds and I was wondering if I could find that as a separate track somewhere. It'd make for some nice night time study ambience xDD
As a person who's completely in live with tatami Galaxy I enjoyed your whole video In fact I came to RU-vid to avoid watching it for third time. The way you put the dame scenes next to each other was amazing I can't thank you enough. I was totally agree on your thoughts. In fact in some point I was pike yessss man that's what I'm talking about. Tatami Galaxy is more than an anime for me. I love its plot its art style its animation its ost its characters and etc. it's the only anime that got me feeling it's part of my life, my character. Ling story short thank you and thank all the cast for this wonderful anime
thank you!!! tatami galaxy is also one of my favorite shows as well. Yusuke Nakamura (the character designer) is also one of my favorite artists as well!! If you liked this video, I'd really appreciate if you check out another video I just made: a 2 hour video about Squidward from SpongeBob, that also deals with absurdism and many of the same themes I started exploring with this Tatami Galaxy video!!
this video is a homage to the whole series, this video fully re-creates (while translating and explaining and expanding and ....) the whole thing in under an hour
hehe i'm glad you liked it!! If you liked this video, please check out another video I just made: a 2 hour video about Squidward! I think it's also really comprehensive!!
absolutely incrediblev video. I can feel the amount of time and energy it took to create this video, and I have to say that is has been masterfully done. I don't think any other person could come close to creating such an artistic piece, let alone review,, bravo. My biggest compliment is that this video feels like the show itself, in its presentation, (obv talking speed), absurdism, and climax. Really well done, and I was wishing it not to end. All the best and thanks for putting this out here in the world.
Thank you for your very nice comment!! If you liked this one, I think you'll really like another video I just made: a 2 hour video about Squidward that also talks about an absurd and irrational world, that I think builds off a lot of thoughts I established in this one! I'm reading through comments of old videos hoping to advertise this newest video...and so thanks again for watching! I really do appreciate it!
I am a fan of Etsuko Yakushimaru and any series that has a song of hers always ends up to be a treat to watch. Tatami Galaxy is a special anime that manages to tell a complete and meaningful story in 11 episodes. Something that a huge majority of the anime that exists simply cannot hope to achieve. I will always treasure this series (this and the time machine blues sequel) in my heart. Perhaps I will read the novels as well in the future.
my friend, this video is a work of art, the way you narrate it, the editing, the extra data written on the images and the fact that it lasts almost a whole hour simply beautiful
I have lot I want to express but let me say just this one thing Thank you, I really needed this. Believe me when I say that I was thinking about giving up on my life from 2 weeks, but this video helped me to clear my head. I am hopeful to see what colours the future holds for me. I will always come back to your video, if I'll ever need it.
At the end of the show after the line said by watashi to akashi "I think that underwear will fit me perfectly" the show cuts to a pink haired homeless woman feeding two cats in the clock tower we see at the end of episodes 1-9 (presumably the real version of the fortuneteller). I've never been quite sure what the show was trying to say with that and wanted to hear your opinion if you have time. :3
I think maybe it was to exemplify how Watashi could be an unreliable narrator, and a lot of his accounts were exaggerated or fictitious. A "real" version of the fortuneteller is the same as like how a "real" version of Ozu appears at the end (also with a different face). The fortuneteller also looks more comparatively normal without her huge nose (or like how Ozu no longer has youkai eyes)...and this could show how Watashi now sees the world more rationally than before.
thank you for watching!!! I'm glad you liked it if you liked this, please check out another video I just made!! I just finished and released a 2 hour video about Squidward that I think explores a lot of the same themes as this one... so please check it out!!
This is the only analysis video I could ever watched on RU-vid with this damned short attention span of mine. I sincerely applaud you friend, you made this amazing anime even more amazing, can't guess how much time it took for you to make this.
Thank you for your nice comment!! I'm glad you were able to watch it. If you really wanna test your attention span... I just finished a 2 hour video about Squidward from SpongeBob that I spent even more time on...and I think it's even better than this one!! So if that interests you, please check it out!! Thanks!!
amazing editing and storytelling/script. came extremely timely on my recs, especially the last part on the fact that we don't have to be stuck thinking so hyperfocused on our failures and being our own worst enemy/barrier. it's something i've forgotten and really needed to be reminded of right now in the midst of my own overbearing thoughts and self-fulfilling prophecy of failure lol! so awesome to see this in general and it's almost a freaking hour long because i first watched tatami in 2021 and was severely thirsting for more tatami video essay content on youtube! anyways once again super well-produced and narrated video
thanks for subscribing!!!! Hopefully you noticed I just finished another mega project 2 hour video about Squidward--I think it's even better than this one! So please check it out if you can!!
@@TheLocalMangaka hell yeah for sure dude, can't do it right now but I will tomorrow lol it's like midnight where I am. Good work bro, keep it up n I hope you're doing well!
I'm glad you were able to find it! If you'd like to watch another video I made, I just finished making a 2 hour video about Squidward that I put months of effort into, and would be really glad if you checked it out!!! Thanks for watching!!
This is an incredible summary of the show. Very very well done. I've never had issues with depression or loneliness or anything of the sort, but I did see this show in freshman year of college. It was in the right place at the right time and was a perfect warning of what not to become. The way we transition from absurdist comedy, laughing at this poor loser, to astute introspection by the end was nothing short of MINDBLOWING for 19 year old me. This is unquestionably the best anime ever made.
thank you!!! I made another video whose editing I'm also really proud of!! It's about Squidward and I just finished, so if you check it out I'd be really happy!
thank you!!!! If you liked this one, I think you'll really like another video I just made: a 2 hour video about Squidward that also talks about an absurd and irrational world, that I think builds off a lot of thoughts I established in this one! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zq4AZarwDqg.html
Hi, I have read 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and I would like to add a little extra to your part where you mention the book because there are a few more things in common here. Firstly, Captain Nemo isn't isolated, he has a crew, but he does isolate himself from the world. It's said and shown that he has a lot of hatred towards people and how he thinks the world works. The entire book is about the main characters who get picked up by the Nautilus, trying to convince Nemo to share his invention with the world, but he refuses because he deems the entire "world" to be worthless. The book in Tatami Galaxy for me shows what could Wasashi become if he used all his genuine talent and skill, but never left behind the bitter hatred and blame he has towards "the world" or in his case Ozu
thank you!!! I feel like it's kinda hard for me to make videos purely with views in mind...but I try my best cuz I just wanna make the best content I can!! Thanks for watching!! Since you liked the video, if you also like SpongeBob, I just made a giant 2 hour long video about Squidward that I think is quite similar to this Tatami video!! So it would mean a lot if you checked that out as well!! Thanks again!!
I had to leave a comment. After just finishing the series, this video essay helped answer any loose ends and questions I had and gives me an even greater appreciation of the series
Thanks!!! I'm glad you liked it!! If you wanna watch another cool video, I just finished making a video very similar to this one...except it's 2 hours long and it's about Squidward from SpongeBob!! Just released it on my channel and would be stoked if you checked it out! Thanks!
Beautiful. I'm very passionate about this anime , it really helped me make my life better. Its crazy how much i relate to a fictional character and how much an anime has had an impact on my life. I always wanted to watch an in depth analysis of the anime to find if someone was as passionate about this anime as me , and this video is exactly what i've been looking for. I've watched this video over 3 times already and will probably rewatch it a couple more times again. Akashi , Higuchi , Jougasaki , Hanuki , Kaori , The neko ramen cart guy and especially Ozu , all characters in this anime are amazing , and i loved how you covered them all and basically every other aspect of the anime. The tatami galaxy is truly a masterpiece, and this video is absurdly good!
I just finished the anime and I’m glad I found your analysis video! You did such a great job explaining the symbolism and scenes, which magnified my appreciation for this anime! Btw, I really love the piano piece you used for the last section! Do you know the name of it?
thank you for watching!!! I haven't seen Sonny Boy... but I did just make another documentary that I'm super proud of that I hope you might like! It's not about anime...but it's a 2 hour video about Squidward from SpongeBob!!! If that sounds interesting, please check it out! And again thanks for watching.
I dont really like the animes artstyle and direction, although artistic it makes the sincere scenes from the novel feel much less important. It really ruins the serious elements too, as most of these serious scenes are spun comedically. Some of the things that happen in the anime are also so unrealistic like the airship or the fortune teller appearing everywhere, I think it should have stuck to the realistic setting. It makes it feel more relatable and the themes more impactful
Hm I do think it’d be interesting to see how the anime would fare if it took itself more seriously. I haven’t read the original novel, but is it like that? I do think the silliness of the anime gives it a unique charm that makes it stand out from your typical anime. But I get that it might not be for everyone.
possibly my favorite youtube video of all time I think you really nailed on the head exactly why this show is so impactful without answering anything explicitly for the viewer. i think that one of the most important parts of the show is realizing that ozu really only lived once so to say, yet he always made the most of his time and it happened to work out for him more or less. that doesn't mean that always having things go your way wont get you trapped in the tatami galaxy, nor will you be able to escape it just because you try your best, but that life is truly about perception. this video attempted and succeeded at covering so much and you didn't leave a single stone unturned I just loved it. it also kinda felt like the video was in the style of the anime itself with its fast narration and smart pauses, along with the subtitles being the exact same as the ones I had when I was watching the show being really helpful for the whole video's style. i know this comment is a lot of time after the video was made but just wow great job
Oh wow I am humbled by your words!!! Thanks for taking the time to write this comment, and I’m glad you liked it!! Yeah it’s been quite a while since I uploaded this but I’m really happy it’s still reaching people!!! 😅 I will def make more videos again in the future…but i can’t guarantee when!! Anyways thanks for watching!!! I come back to read comments every now and then and I’m very glad to see this video is still being viewed.
haha yeah i was trying to emulate the fast talking at the beginning of the series as like a comical effect. Might've been to the detriment of the video, but yeah that was the intent.
Thank you!!! If you liked it, please check out a new video I just made that's 2 hours...and it's about Squidward from SpongeBob!!! And thanks again for watching!!
Haha someone recognized the opening song. I think hearing this song partially inspired me to make the video…because the song immediately made me think of something going very fast, which reminded me of tatami galaxy’s narration, and my initial idea over a year ago was to try and do just a speed summary of tatami galaxy to this song. And then it eventually involved into something different
Ah thank you! I'm glad this video is somehow still able to find people. It was a very personal video I made, and I didn't expect it to get many views since Tatami is not exactly a very popular series...but it's really great getting a random comment every few weeks of people finding this video and connecting with it!!
Thank you!!! I've recently shifted to making short form content because...it builds subscribers way faster LOL. But once I amass a large enough following, I really want to go back to making long form content like this again!
Thank you!!! I'm glad you watched the whole thing!! If you want to watch another great video, I just made a giant 2 hour video about Squidward from SpongeBob that I hope you'lll also like!! And again thanks for commenting!! (even though I'm really late on replying haha)
Holy shit this is probably one of the best Tatami Galaxy videos I have ever watched and it especially good cuz the way you narrated literally makes it feel like I’m watching an episode of Tatami Galaxy Although, and I doubt this was intentional, but the entire Ozu segment felt like non-stop fuel for my ship (which is Ozu and Watashi) and I was caught so off guard I started tearing up 😭 Seriously though your analysis of everything was so good dawg I might to rewatch this video again soon (along with the show itself cuz it’s been like 3 or 4 years since I watched it)
Me terminé este anime recientemente y estaba buscando un vídeo como el tuyo pero no podía encontrarlo, afortunadamente hoy me apareció y me encanta el esfuerzo que has puesto en la edición y el análisis, muchas gracias por hacer este video 💗
Another great video! One thing I like about The Tatami Galaxy is that despite its eccentric style, at least to me, it seems like most of its main points are made very clear to the audience and easy to understand, but it also provides tons of different fun threads and details to follow. I definitely didn't notice many of the things mentioned here, and it was great seeing a lot of these things collected into one video.
Thanks so much for watching and for being my first comment haha. I think you are officially the first person I know of who has watched this besides me LOL. But yeah it’s def an easy to follow story, esp since many of the plot points are repeated so often
