Tatau is about Siaki (Jack), an elderly Samoan man struggling to come to terms with the lifelong shame of having an incomplete traditional tattoo and the shame of now losing his sight. As Siaki's vision deteriorates, memories of the painful tattooing ceremony he underwent in his youth haunt him as he yearns to see his tattoo completed before it's too late.
Starring: Beulah Koale, Robbie Magasiva, Aleni Tufuga, Stacey Leilua, Vasa Tasele.

My pops is from Utulei Village-He almost got the pe’a when he turned 18. Instead he left the island and joined the Air Force. Now at 82 years of age and no tattoos, he doesn’t regret not receiving the pe’a 🙏🏽 Love you pops

Yes in old days honour was the main thing nowadays our pe'a not anymore. It's like a game to others and the tufuga it's their way of getting money. The value is lost

110%. Bring back the value bring back the Honour! people are forgetting what this all meant and what it means to be a sogaimiti, nowdays everyone has different means of getting it nowdays people get for show.

Sounds like hate an a bit of "I can't do it" wouldn't matter why you got it, even to go though the process is hard if you can't handle it don't hate on those that can, an if they can't finish it they go through the shame not you, its our own people who are always envious an jealous of those who go though it an use the excuse of these values BS, if you're not there to carry the shame an dishonour for those who can't finish it then shhhhhh🫴👌

@@MainMan13 its not hate it's love when it's comes to Samoan events the sogaimiti is very important but if the sogaimiti can't handles his responsibility. We feel sad because the true meaning of the sogaimiti is service and also the meaning of every patterns is all the kinds of service in Samoa. So sorry if I have offended you but I'm a sogaimiti and I serve my family in and out of Samoa fale. I have also witnessed a sogaimiti that cannot serve through words it's sad.

@@MainMan13 I got mine so your coming from the wrong point of view of what we are saying, yes everyone has their reasons. Majority and I say majority of the reason is for show. Learn and understand before calling people haters, people who get their Pe’a have the wrong reason, why do you think tufugās have also lost the value they are all about business!. Ka muamua le guku kua kaa ai lo’u pe’a is the saying they said back in the days, that is not how it is no more, if you know your value and how things are done around your own house and family, you understand what serving your family means know and how to puipui le aiga, the understand of the pe’a is serving your family protecting your family, becoming a man, a leader. There is no hate

Awesome short movie. appreciate the respect, in all pacific islander cultures. I was tearing up at the father and daughter argument. Our fathers can be strong figures but can keep alot of troubles sealed in, they can go years without you even knowing.

Fact: Back then if a Pe'a (tattoo) was not complete for men in the olden days you ould be given the title of a coward. As much as I love being a Samoan islander there are things that I respect and disagree to at the same time when it comes to serious situations like this.

I dunno if it's a true story but a reality for some men. It's embarrassing if the pe'a is incomplete, they don't show it, hence why some do go back and complete it years later.

In Samoa many people who get this tattoo (Tatau) don't survive, either of infection or blood loss.

It might have been like that in the past, but not anymore. There's a reason why this kind of work takes a long time. I got a tattoo in apia and I don't regret it.

And how is this evil? 😢 Sad that people judge others without understanding the meaning behind anything cultural whether it's dances, tribal patterns, clothing, religion etc., people that are close minded or like minded tend to be quick to speak but slow to listen or in this case learn!
