To sing Amneris you need a mezzo with a Spinto/Dramatic voice type. Tatiana Troyanos had a very beautiful lyric some what Spinto voice. She perfectly knew her voice type & what she was able to sing very well. For that I'm very happy she made those very wise choices. Amneris is not Eboli & she knew that fact very well indeed. Anagilsa suited her voice as well & all the Strauss trouser roles. Unfortunately we lost her took SOON in life. 😘👋😳💜🇬🇧🇷🇺🇮🇹🇪🇸🇫🇷🇺🇸🇨🇳🇩🇪🇯🇵🌍🌎🌏👸👋💃

@Dymension I'm sure you're right. I remember Verrett saying that it was a combination of the role being very low and the fact that most of the conductors just couldn't keep the orchestra sufficiently under control so that she didn't feel like she had to kill herself to be heard. And Verrett did not exactly have a small voice.
I remember hearing her sing this in NY with Gilda Cruz-Romo as Aida and James McCracken as Radames. It was a super performance, and Troyanos was really good as Amneris, but she gave the role up after that season. I thought at the time, that it was a shame, but then again, she was such an intelligent singer, she must have had her good reasons for doing so.
You need too much guns around EFGA above middle C for Amneris to get over the thick orchestra. She manages extremely well here but it she has to push a lot and she really enjoyed singing roles with a higher tessitura
Always loved Tatiana...BUT she had a habit of cancelling.........so I never saw her live. She cancelled Eboli and Carmen at Covent Garden. But these things happen.
I actually saw her Carmen at CG - it was terribly unspectacular. I then saw her as as Judith in Bluebeards Castle and Sesto (Clemenza) in Salzburg and was blown away. Finally I heard her sing a magnificent Adalgisa in Vienna. I was glad I had the opportunity of changing mind about her.
