Taurus TX22 Review

"This pistol will be retained" is one of the strongest endorsements I've ever heard from Paul, especially considering the fact that it's a Taurus.

I have heard that Paul met his wife when he found her in his jacket pocket. I have also heard the wedding reception was held in that very same pocket.

A year later, it's time to describe our now-considerable experience with the TX-22 in our busy Intro classes. We replaced our 12 Ruger Mk III 22/45s with a dozen TX-22s and the short version is, we're beyond pleased with the change. The TX-22s have proven to be far superior for the intro-level training class than the Mk IIIs. They are more reliable, more approachable for the new shooter, and have several features that make them a much better trainer. They have excellent memory grooves for the trigger finger and offside thumb. The existence of the manual safety allows us to teach the use of one, even if it's not crucial in the Intro. The magazine capacity is of course a plus, although we have our newbies only loading 12 at a time, as that works better in terms of focus and concentration. And they run better than the Rugers did for us, especially once CCI Mini-Mags were no longer available every week- we have been running Aguila Super Extra or similar. Just as an example, we did an Intro last week with some 1500 rounds being fired by our 13 students. There was not one single malfunction that I saw all night that was not student-induced or a dud round. That's really good. And these are under-maintained, dirty guns getting beat on every week. Incidentally, all of the gun lock back when empty reliably, much more so than the Rugers too. One minor quirk we've learned is to have the person filling the mag (to any level) pull the load button down and let it snap up to re-settle the rims. This makes a difference as it covers for crooked loading by inexperienced hands. Another major point of improvement is that there is virtually no transition training needed when the student moves on the the striker-fired centerfire guns we have in the class (mostly P320s M&P9s, and PPQs), where with the Rugers, we had to start all over with slide racking and control operation. This saves a lot of time for the instructors on the range. All of our instructors will agree: we don't miss the old Mk IIIs a bit.

I love it that whenever Paul shoots the last round instead of reloading a new magazine before the chamber is empty, he emphasizes its instructional purposes only. In other words, count your rounds and reload before the chamber is empty. Thanks Paul!

I have never had my TX22 not lock back! And out of all the reviews on RU-vid, I have never seen this issue. Absolutely the best 22 striker fired Polymer gun on the market today! Oh and it is made here in America.

I'd like to know how does one become part of this crew? Is there a golden ticket in a Remington green and white box somewhere?

Wow, talk about a three in one - the first time I can recall Paul audibly growling in irritation on screen, and the absolute professional burn onto glock while adding a Taurus to the inventory.

I appreciate this Man in today's world of Boys. He stands in the snow, rain, and wind and keeps schedule trucking along!!! It would be an absolute honor to spend life surrounded by real men without all the childish drawbacks. Thank you Paul.

I have learned to not use the loading assist tabs on my TX22 magazines. Since doing that, the few failures I did get with nose dives during feeding have gone away. I also haven't had a rim lock scenario since then either. I love my TX22, it's been a solid shooter.

TX22 is a solid pistol. I have one myself, and of course, it’s loaded with Remington Golden Bullet 36 grain Hollow Point.

My experience: Remington thunderdolts- across all the guns I have- have more duds than I’ve any other 22 ammo I’ve used.

This was a fair review of the TX. I got one last year and while I've had a few issues shooting Winchester Whitebox and some old Federal Champion ammo, the little guy's unloaded everything else I've bought so far without any firearm or mag-related issues cropping up. Could it be better? Of course. But if it's good enough to remain in Team Harrell's inventory, it's good enough to remain in mine.

It's amazing, one of the very few gun channels that has ad's running. Did anyone notice the 'aura' around Paul when shooting. Your shooting quite good considering the wind.

"this tx22 will be retained by my crew"- OK Paul Ive heard enough, I got a tx22 yesterday, and its been exceptional in every way. The ergonomics, accuracy and reliability is perfect.

I picked up the TX22 a few months ago, and was as surprised as Paul to learn that it is a legitimately good gun. I've had mixed results with Taurus in the past, but TX22 seems to be a winner.

When dealing with Taurus fans, a brief mention of prices at the time is always appreciated. Makes us cheapskates feel good when we find great deals.

I have a TX22 and love it.The slide has never failed to lock back on the last round. It has shot every kind of bulk ammo I have tried with no problems. Better ergos than the M&P for my hand. Good video but not what I have found to be the case in my experience with my TX22. Thanks for the video..

Hmm. Let's see how this goes. My TX22 has been pretty awesome. Gobbles up Remington Thunderbolts as fast as I can refill the magazine. Can't ask for more than that from a plinker.

Thanks Paul. I love how thorough you are and always appreciate learning from what I consider to be "an expert". I saw a barely used TX22 Competition at my local gun store recently and couldn't pass it up. Wow, what a great shooter. It makes me look like an expert. Will be a great pistol for family and friends at the range. Yes, Taurus has come a long ways, including having manufacturing in the US.

Gotta say, the camera angle and lighting from 3:05 onward is very picturesque. Everything from the clouds moving, to the trees swaying, to the beam of light coming down upon Paul and the smoke coming from every shot.

Paul THANKS. This is a video we’ve been waiting for. My tx22 preformed similarly to your test gun with federal ammunition. However I must say the same ammo from the same box worked nearly perfectly in my ruger 10/22.

Thank you for this review of the Taurus TX22. I have two of them plus several extra magazines. I think it's a beautiful gun, I love the full size, and I especially love the 16 + 1 rounds. I'm proud of Taurus for bringing their game up. And what a wonderful honor that Guns & Ammo chose the TX22 as it's Gun of the Year when it was debuted.

Your reviews are always so much more refreshing to watch than the standard fare that I usually see on pistol reviews. Somehow I get the idea that you’re an engineer in your regular life because your design of experiments seems to be very well thought through.

I definitely got a good TX22. I've shot 1250 of very mixed brands and weights. Not one single problem and it locks back every single time. Accurate too. You always do an excellent job with your videos. Thank You Paul!

Great video. I am late to this party, but I will add my two cents. I own two of the S&W M&P 22's. One is the full size that was made in Germany with the internal hammer (not striker fired) and the other is the Compact made in US with striker fired. I have owned the Taurus TX22 for about two years. I was turned off by the Glock 44 based on 22plinksters review, so I never bought one. The Taurus TX22 is a blast to shoot. I would compare it in every way to the S&W's. I am a 22lr addict and also own an old school Browning Buck Mark with gold trigger and cherry wood grips, a S&W 22A, and Ruger Mark 1's and 2's. The Taurus will also be retained by my crew.

With the price of ammo these day I have a feeling we're gonna get a lot of .22 vids

Finally! Thank you Paul! I've been trying to tell people how good and reliable the Taurus TX22 is. Even after I would point out that Guns & Ammo named it the pistol of the year, the large magazine capacity, the out-of-the-box accuracy, the low sticker price, the cheap ammo, the pic rail, the comment that always shut me down was: "has Paul Harrell reviewed it?"

Great demonstration of 22 auto pistols performances that make a valid point that is worth mention. Double action revolvers are still and always will be; sometimes a better choice to use instead of an auto pistol. They are able to continue to fire even if a faulty round fails just by pulling the trigger. Some auto pistols have internal hammers able to strike the round a second time; however, this feature can be helpful but only if the round fires on the second trigger pull. If happens not too fire it requires more time to clear the failure than a revolver. One other handy and important feature revolvers bring to the table is retaining empty cases. Going on an Easter egg hunt every time you go shooting cleaning up the mess auto pistols all make. Last but not least revolvers are able to use all power levels of ammo and bullet design without any issues.

Need this right now with all the insanity going on.

After watching dozens of videos on the TX22 Taurus I finally went and got one to go along with my ruger 10/22 rifles. Thanks to Paul Harrell and team and many others for their excellent reviews. The bizzare slide not locking back was strange but I am glad it broke in and began working correct after a few mags. One thing folks may not know is you can buy a "Competition conversion" which is a different slide, barrel, sights, and spring/guide rod set to instantly convert your regular TX22 to a TX 22 Competition. Its on Taurus's website for $199.99 It also makes your TX 22 red dot ready. Thanks again Paul and crew!

Taurus has gotten significantly better. My G2C hasn't hiccuped yet after several hundred intentionally mixed rounds. That said it is the only Taurus I have even considered in 10 years after two previous drastic failures.

I've been hearing that Taurus are improving their quality control these days.

I just bought the Taurus 22 day before yesterday and went to the range today. Wow, what a great, fun little gun to shoot. A terrific plinker. I was just using bulk ammo of different types that was thrown into a bucket all mixed together. I didn't have a single failure of any kind. Amazing. Taurus finally got something right! Will be a good gun to practice sight acquisition and trigger control without breaking the bank on ammo.
