I grew up on LI sound. My Dad and I used to go out for Blackfish with handlines right in front of the Winchester mansion at Johnson’s point. Circa 1955
Haha this is my favorite of your videos. my 4 year old daughter and I watch them together. She loves the "tap tap tap and BOOM there he is!" cracks us up. Keep up the great work. She wants me to write her name. Eva says hi!
Love your videos brother! I used to fish in Tiverton RI almost every weekend. My buddy and I hauled a 17 ft Lund boat all the way from Manchester NH to Tiverton RI we caught tons tons of fish. I stopped fishing ever since my wife gave birth to my son, but I will be back to RI, and definitely try out the striped bass spot! Thanks for sharing !
Thanks. I've never put my kayak in over there but I can imagine it's would be even better fishing. Also the same day I filmed this video stripers ended up Blitzing for two hours. And I caught about 50 fish but all schoolies.
Those are a good example of why you all up north call them blackfish. They are dark. Ours down here in OC, Maryland are lighter with cool colors. Check out our vids to see the diff. More coming soon
Hey Rich, been watching every single one of your videos! I am a 64 year old newbee to fishing and plan to do as much as I can as I am now retired. Thanks for all the tips and advice. I was hoping to fish for Tautog as soon as the season starts. I was on Gooseberry Island today and noticed a lot of those little "boat" clams/shellfish washed up as the tide fell. They were alive and all piggybacked to one another and was wondering if they would make good blackfish bait? Any advice?
Plenty of Tautog and green crabs under rocks past the railroad tracks under the 'Sokkonett' bridge too! Fin place to fish of the HUGE boulders.. Be super careful tho' - and Fish Aholic ---> FISH ON. 🎣 Love your videos! You're a character, great attitude!👍🏾 FISH ON! Ever fish in Middleton R.I. by the Old Navy base and old tracks?🌈 The ocean is beautiful there in sunsets and sunrises/4:00 a.m. usually.
I went to Westport horseneck beach today Massachusetts fishing..I just started fishing or a hobby I caught about 10 of them fish let them go didn't know if they were worth keeping to eat....
Best Tautog fishing in RI (you need a boat) is at a big rock that you can see from many southern beaches. It looks a bit like the top of a submarine from a distance. Half crabs will get you as many as you want. You didn't hear it from me. P.S. It's quite rough and dangerous.
Great video! How far out at this spot do you need to go? I tried fishing from the tall rock in the middle of this point, but had no luck...maybe I just couldn't feel the tapping with the crazy winds. Any suggestions? Also, do you recommend a high or low tide?
Just got back from R.I. fished East wall on Friday.Fished a.m. and p.m.Tried for stripers, but no action at all.Used the same lures you used in the striper video.Saw a tall thin guy in a wet suit come by us not long before dark go out to the end of the wall and catch some..Was that you? Also, Saturday morning went to black point and went down shore from where you shot this video, and caught my first Tog.We caught 5 Tog that morning.I got a nice one also.Wind was pretty rough on the fishing Friday night and Saturday.Surfers loved it!
+newyota1 yeah i was out there friday evening and night. I wear a Camo wetsuit. I went out there caught one schoolie around 25", then hooked a big bass that just pulled the hook but retaliated with another bass around 20lbs. There has been more big bass around then schoolies or from my perspective of what ive been catching, Thursday Same thing went out in the PM caught 5 stripers 28-32inches. Good to hear you did pretty well with the tog.
+fish aholictv So the fishing only picks up at dark?Heard the night bite was good from owner at the bait shop near there.Do you still use a bucktail jig after dark or a Hopkins type lure?Wish I had more time to fish.I gave it a good shot on the stripers on the wall, but I guess they are not as active after daylight at times. Is that point on the wall that much better than mid point?I did go across where the breach/slight opening in the wall is in the morning at low tide, but not very far.Not that brave and new to this type of fishing.
+newyota1 Yeah its not for the inexperienced especially fishing into dark and after. So take your time and build up to it. The bite has been consistent for me into dark and at dark on a btail jig, darters, and gibbs poppers. You can catch fish any time of day but its all about tide and current, now that were entering into October the weather will get colder and the water so it will turn the fish on better throughout the day. I Fished last night during the full moon high tide and caught a fish over 20lbs after fishing for fifteen minutes out on the end of the wall. it was even a little rough for me out there taking a few waves over my head and getting knocked down a little. I left after i caught the fish and for good reason after high tide with the full moon the east wall was underwater. So its good to know how to read water that you can handle and what you cant.
+viper2788 yeah keep a few occasionally but usually i will only keep what i can eat in one sitting because fresh fish is best or if Im feeding the friends or fam.
+Daniel Rodriguez I like the rod and this is pretty much the first rod i pick up when going togging. its got some amazing back bone to pull some big tautog up out of the rocks but also its a good spare surfcasting rod because it can handle bass and blues fairly well. Ive caught numerous 20+ pound fish on this 7' Tsunami.
I would love to know the location of this fishing spot and do I need a boat? I live in RI and I'm looking for a fishing spot to go fishing with my 13yr old son. Me and my son would like to do surf fishing.
Can somebody tell me what bait works best for saltwater fishing in rhode island? Me and my dad always compete against each other to see who will catch the best fish but he hasn't caught anything but porgie or scup I think I wanna try to get something better I need advice thanks
Bright soft plastics work fantastic, I run 1/2-2oz lures and for reg bait you can but salted squid , salted clams work great too plus ya can make a bucket of em to last a month or 2 of fishing daily. Naxos rock salt w/o iodine and whatever bait whether it's raw shrimp, squid ,clam, even fish chunked, just layer it with salt on the bottom, bait ,salt ,and etc . I do squid for stripers, shrimp for fluke and dabs, clam for togs and sea bass, and chunk bait for sharks
+hoodford1 It can be but actually on this same day I was spearfishing and the fish were really really spooky for Tautog and that is how I knew exactly where to throw my bait because they were stacked up in a hole between the rocks.
Keep your eye on the tide if you want to live. The rocks are dangerous. Tide moves quickly and before you know is you're trapped in rough sea and barnicles.
Great! I will try it out and see if I can catch something, I never have no luck finding a great fishing spot . Hopefully this will be the spot. Is there a park at this spot? I want to bring my kids with me if there's a park so they can play and wait for me.
godfammusic there is no park here at this spot and it is not an area to really bring kids because you have to climb down a wall or rock bluff that is prob 50-75ft high just to get to the water. Also be warned if you fish this spot there are a lot of deep pools and pockets and if you do not know the water you can all of a sudden take a wrong step be in water over your head! Don't ware waders if you have intentions to enter the water. i would recommend a wet suit.
