The tawny emperor butterfly, Asterocampa clyton, is a common butterfly throughout the eastern United States but is rarely seen due to its elusive behaviors. They hang out in the canopy of wet deciduous forests that have Celtis (hackberry) trees.
The life cycle of this butterfly is one that very few people have the opportunity to see so we caught some wild females and reared them in order to document the life history. The female lays a huge pyramid of eggs, the caterpillars hang out in massive clusters and also can hibernate if they need to.
Check out our Keys Moths, Wacky Worm video that highlights this butterflies life cycle from start to finish.
