CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Travis (Robert De Niro) comes into the Palantine volunteer headquarters and asks Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) out for coffee.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All the animals come out at night" -- and one of them is a cabby about to snap. In Martin Scorsese's classic 1970s drama, insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-'70s New York City, wishing for a "real rain" to wash the "scum" off the neon-lit streets. Chronically alone, Travis cannot connect with anyone, not even with such other cabbies as blowhard Wizard (Peter Boyle). He becomes infatuated with vapid blonde presidential campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), who agrees to a date and then spurns Travis when he cluelessly takes her to a porno movie. After an encounter with a malevolent fare (played by Scorsese), the increasingly paranoid Travis begins to condition (and arm) himself for his imagined destiny, a mission that mutates from assassinating Betsy's candidate, Charles Palatine (Leonard Harris), to violently "saving" teen hooker Iris (Jodie Foster) from her pimp, Sport (Harvey Keitel). Travis' bloodbath turns him into a media hero; but has it truly calmed his mind? Written by Paul Schrader, Taxi Driver is an homage to and reworking of cinematic influences, a study of individual psychosis, and an acute diagnosis of the latently violent, media-fixated Vietnam era. Scorsese and Schrader structure Travis' mission to save Iris as a film noir version of John Ford's late Western The Searchers (1956), aligning Travis with a mythology of American heroism while exposing that myth's obsessively violent underpinnings. Yet Travis' military record and assassination attempt, as well as Palatine's political platitudes, also ground Taxi Driver in its historical moment of American in the 1970s. Employing such techniques as Godardian jump cuts and ellipses, expressive camera moves and angles, and garish colors, all punctuated by Bernard Herrmann's eerie final score (finished the day he died), Scorsese presents a Manhattan skewed through Travis' point-of-view, where De Niro's now-famous "You talkin' to me" improv becomes one more sign of Travis' madness. Shot during a New York summer heat wave and garbage strike, Taxi Driver got into trouble with the MPAA for its violence. Scorsese desaturated the color in the final shoot-out and got an R, and Taxi Driver surprised its unenthusiastic studio by becoming a box-office hit. Released in the Bicentennial year, after Vietnam, Watergate, and attention-getting attempts on President Ford's life, Taxi Driver's intense portrait of a man and a society unhinged spoke resonantly to the mid-'70s audience -- too resonantly in the case of attempted Reagan assassin and Foster fan John W. Hinckley. Taxi Driver went on to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it lost the Best Picture Oscar to the more comforting Rocky. Anchored by De Niro's disturbing embodiment of "God's lonely man," Taxi Driver remains a striking milestone of both Scorsese's career and 1970s Hollywood.

I truly feel this scene is all about Travis's insecurities. All the things that he said about betsy being lonely and unhappy are all his problems that he is projecting out onto her. And when he says that she needs something, what he really is trying to say is that he desperately needs her. Ahhh this movie is so great!

Cybill Shepherd is so mesmerizing and beautiful in this scene. The way she mulls over Travis's offer is one of the most suspenseful scenes in the whole movie. She's so real and believable. If I ever met a woman like Betsy in real life, I'd probably have to kill myself, because I know she would never go for me.

Im realizing now that Travis was a typical textbook narcissist. Lays on the charm thick, then when rejected or doesn't get what he wants, gets violent and pitches a huge fit. Then also tries to get even with anyone he feels has wronged him (and even some others who didn't). I've been learning about narcissism recently, can you tell? lol

Travis portrayed his own desires onto Betsy, he was infatuated by this woman that he knows nothing about. He lives inside his head way too much and doesn't really have an idea about the perceptions of others. this film and it's themes are timeless

What's crazy is that Travis could have got her! He pretty nailed this inaction then blew it with his lack of social skills. But I guess that's what makes his character so scary.

Legend of a film. Watch it for yourself, and tell me how you would even start this review. Seriously an iconic movie, with a top-tier cast, soundtrack, and storyline. Saw this in the summer, and damn what a highlight. It's worth watching. And this will always remain legendary, just like Robert De Niro. So much action, emotion, and darkness. An extremely underrated film, that does not get its credit in modern times. 8.20.2020

I once met a guy like that, lonely and awkward but with a personality on his own. I liked him immediately but unfortunately he kept acting like an idiot because in his mind he still wasn't worthy of female attention so he would pull off that bs masculinism and pick up artists stuff. I was like: women like you, you are interesting and you acting chauvinist spoils everything. It took him ages to let go of his awkward behaviour and realises he is ok and some women will like him some other won't and it's no big deal. Many men underestimate themselves....

As a 20-year-old guy, I catch myself throwing displays of excessive masculinity on social media for girls I probably won’t kindle a conversation with. Back in high school, I overlooked social cues girls threw at me, because I too didn’t feel worthy of their attention-their interactions, even if they were casual, with me felt misdirected, random. It all stems from low self-esteem.

I think that she is worried about "what people will say", she likes him, I don't doubt it, but Travis is weird and the clothes are not the best looking. I think she is flirting when nobody notices, but treating him standard when the rest see. She doesn't want to see her status damaged.
