'Taxi war' takes deadly toll in South Africa

In South Africa, the army has been deployed to Cape Town, as what's being described as a "taxi war" continues to escalate.
Dozens of people have been killed over the past few months, with rival taxi associations battling it out for ownership of a hotly contested route.
Authorities have now closed the route, in a bid to restore calm.
But thousands of commuters are bearing the brunt of the closure.
Al Jazeera's Robyn Smith reports.

Not news at all. There's a whole telenovela - nine seasons running - based on taxi wars that happen. This is just the latest eruption of these wars. Taxi wars have been a thing since the '90s.

Some of the government officials are the bosses. It's just a mess, the worst part they operate in a mafia way, if gorvenment try to intervene they make threats. Gorvenment is forced to listen to them.

I'm from SA, and I'm shocked how a problem in one area can be viewed as a national problem. For clarity, most of the country has an established taxi association which works with the government to avoid such cases. However, in the western Cape the situation is as seen above. It would be more sensible for the headline to say cape Town instead of naming the whole country. This is just yellow page journalism used to twist the image of African countries.

And this dear friends, is in the Western Cape province, an area considered to be much safer than the kwaZulu Natal and Gauteng provinces that experienced rampant looting, violence and property destruction. 🥵

Considering that Cape Town has the highest murder rates, how is it "considered safer"?? A riot in KZN and Gauteng, that lasted for a few days, started and ended two weeks ago. Taxi wars and gang violence on the Cape flats however have been going on for decades.

They've actually got a lot of new rolling stock in storage, but they don't want to put the new trains out because until the entire transport industry is secured, what is the point in putting out brand new trains that might get vandalized in protest.

Tsotsis have damaged the rail, stole the rails during the level 5 lockdown and they sell those heavy rail metals to smelting plants. It's worse problem is the South African law enforcement is corrupt and its not doing it job. They should clean up the law enforcement, then the gorvenment will have authority.

I was once in a taxi from Louis Botha Avenue to Edenvale when someone opened fire and killed the driver while the taxi was still moving. I remember that very well I was 15 years old and we were jumping out of the the windows while people sitting in-front tried to stop the taxi and slow it down. I will never forget that .

the taxi industry makes a lot of money here, and unlike in other countries taxis are highly linked to gangs so if there are any disputes there will be violence. In the end its all about money because the current conflict is over lucrative taxi routes, which to outsiders may seem weird but here the taxi industry is deep rooted into criminality.
