From start to finish, Meg takes a tour of the Taylor Acoustic Guitars Factory over in San Diego, California! She's joined by Jim Kirlin from Taylor, where we go through the journey every USA made Taylor Acoustic Guitar makes, from bare wood getting plained and getting acclimated all the way through to fitting their patented Taylor neck joint and final finishing!
From traditionally matching the wood grain by eye, to huge robotic arms putting the perfect finish and shine on the guitar, Taylors factory is an incredible, unique place with the perfect blend of old school craftsmanship and modern day technology crafting some of the best Acoustic Guitars the world has ever seen.

I worked for a tree service and operated the wax dip for end checkering. There were only two of us. Our End Use was rifle and shot gun stocks and fore ends. We milled slabs of oak and walnut, aged them in huts in walnut orchards for two years then cut them into blanks for sale to Benelli, Winchester & Remington.

Great factory tour. I find it very amusing when the interviewer asked where they will source eucalyptus from and they didn’t even think of sourcing it from Australia as we have eucalyptus trees in abundance here.

Eucalyptus is endemic to Australia of various species and the best in the world. I think for fretboard or neck eucalyptus word be amazing don't know about the tone for the body. Like Kao it contains natural oil of its own for protection.

Fascinating. It appears that all of the complicated craftsmanship and lutherie has been given over to the machines. When Taylor first came onto the market, they were using these machines to create a cost saving advantage for the consumers. You could proudly say to your guitar friends that this amazing sounding guitar came in at a price point significantly below the major competitors. Fast forward to today and how although Taylor offers lower priced guitars, they do not stand out like the low priced models of their beginnings. Where is the justification for a 9000 dollar taylor when all of the carving and inlay is being done by a machine? I assume we are paying overhead costs for the machines and the increased price of rarer woods but cannot appreciate how they got so far away from their origins as a disruptor to the acoustic guitar manufacturing world.

I live 5 minutes from there. I’ve got to go take the public tour that I’ve heard they do. My Dad sold material to them years ago when they did an expansion. So they gave him the more behind the scenes tour.

Got my mom an 814ce Vclass. More of an open, slightly sharp sound. Easy playability and beautiful solid nitro finish. Crazy to think the guitar was made in the same area she lives in.

Great video. The neck joint is very impressive! I thought I bi humorous he was explaining the RFID technology. He explained how it is a quality and labor improvement technology as the employee can’t figure out his next job. The employe then leaves with two necks looking for an answer.

With the reclaimed woods from California I wonder if there are woods that Taylor wants the cities to start growing to make better guitars?

I’d be fine with the cost staying high if they decided to pay their craftsman a premium wage for a premium finish work instead pocketing everything. Maybe then the fret ends on a $1200 Taylor guitar wouldn’t cut my hand.
@jameswilliford5478
@jameswilliford5478 2 года назад
No...now they have to pay a trained skilled engineer to keep up the robotics instead of the people that had done the job by hand. I imagine the production numbers using the robotics is definitely more profitable though or they wouldn't be doing it this way. Probably getting a much better end product too. More even finishes, more precise cuts, better balanced instrument all the way around. Of course it there will be many that say my great grandfather didn't do it that way, or it has no soul. I definitely have more respect for Taylor after watching this tour. I believe they are doing a lot to try to make a great sounding, long lasting beautiful guitar. If treated right and maintained right a guitar can last you a lifetime. Definitely a good investment.

Gotta be kidding me. Machine never make as good guitar as a handmade skill luthier. Better for mass production quality control maybe

Whilst most guitar companies use CNC routing, Taylor use lasers. Why is this? I don't believe that any perceived benefit has been explained.

Crazy. Watch factory tours for Fender, Gibson, Martin and PRS. The whole video is about the skilled workers building their guitars. Human hands is something those other companies are proud of and boast about. Don’t believe the consistency BS folks, using robots to build a product is a shit load more profitable for a company. I prefer to pay a ton of money for guitar that was built, sanded and tuned by the hands of a skilled worker that’s been repeating the process for 20-30 years.
@rogerhartje5964
@rogerhartje5964 8 месяцев назад
CNCs, robots, lasers, and not a craftsman in sight. I'd expect that from made in China, but what's the point of a $4000 made in the USA guitar not touched by a master's hands. Thought I'd watch this tour and be excited to by made here, but the only difference between made in the US and made in China is where the robots sit😢

Probably using a middle of the road set up at the factory. I believe a lot of people usually end up lowering the action after buying their guitar. My Yamahas usually have pretty high action.

I personally want a guitar built by humans and not buffed by "Buffy 1 & 2". Of course the main goal is that they don't require a paycheck, health care etc. Maximum profit is highly in play. I'll stick to my Martin's
