the movie didn't do to well in theatres in the U.S. but I see the DVD/blue ray flying off the shelves at walmart. I have seen the movie many times....the FX are oscar worthy (the freeway collapse alone deserves an oscar)...
I like Taylor but casting him in the lead of this movie was one of the BIGGEST Mistakes Ever made. U had Liam Neeson (one of the biggest action draws around) and he's in the movie a whopping 10 mins or less doing practically Nothing. Please steer away from the "Rebel Without A Cause" scenario...that is soo Tired-Ass Lame. This movie BOMBED because it deserved too... I guess we have wealthy people who like to throw money away. Lots of it.
sunshine stone Really? Is that why it did so well at the box office? Come to think of it, other then Liam, I haven't seen Taylor in anything resembling a lead in anything. He's a secondary actor with secondary skills.
OK. Check him out in The Normal Heart and The Bang Bang Club. It may change your mind. He was also great in Lone Survivor as real-life Seal hero Mike Murphy. Apparently Murphy's family gave glowing comments of Taylor's portrayal of Mike, so he couldn't have done too badly. Battleship was just popcorn dross - just mindless fun that does exactly what it says on the tin. And nobody involved in making it pretended it was anything more. So you are kind of stating the obvious really. Nobody was expecting Shakespeare OK.
Judi O'Regan I wasn't "expecting Shakespeare OK" because I was looking for a well thought out action adventure scenario with actors who can actually pull it off. If you're going to spend several hundred million dollars making a movie of this caliber put people in it that can make you (at least) believe that they are real and NOT a cute actor who looks good in the uniform. Taylor is a good actor (and getting better) but he marginalizes his his credibility by involving himself with work that is built on hype and momentary glitz. His forte is serious dramatic roles so I would stick to that.
Trent Timoy um...this is the only popcorn movie he's done. All his other roles have been quite serious. And yes, True Detective had its flaws but I think Taylor acquitted himself rather well. And he has shown great integrity in choosing his roles. He's becoming well known as an actor's actor, and Battleship was only one of his first movies. He was treading the water so to speak - no pun intended - and I guess every actor needs to try his hand at everything when starting out. He is playing a real life firefighter in his next movie, so is showing a penchant for playing real life heroes. And whether a movie he is in smashes the box office or not, Taylor has stated that he won't let the box office define him as an actor or a person. Now that is integrity.
