As someone who's favourite song (like many swiftie) is all too well, To get the visual of a song that has lived in my mind for the past eight years and have it be exactly how I pictured it is everything I could have asked for and with the extra lyrics and longer version it's somehow even better. A masterpiece

The line "I'll get older, but your lovers stay my age" is a reference that Taylor makes to his relationships. She has now grown from that experience but he's still stuck on dating girls that were once her age. Jake Gyllenhaal is 40 dating a girl that is 25 now but when they first started she was 22.

Taylor chose the cast for this short film, she personally reached out to Sadie and Dylan. She said she wouldn’t have made the short film if she didn’t have Sadie to play as her younger self. Taylor wrote All too Well when she was 21 and Jake was like 30.

And we get that she's more mature now from these lines. 🤧 she's a great lyricist.

I think he was her first love, like she had boyfriends before but she never felt anything like she did with jake, it was her first time experiencing real heartbreak.

I feel like the film conveys that that relationship had a clear power imbalance. A 9-10 year age gap is one thing when everyone is older and experienced to begin with, but at 20? That is not a gap - it’s a chasm. A huge difference in life experiences. I dated someone 9 years older when I was 20, and you’re still learning to be an adult at that age. An idealistic girl/woman will be inclined to fall hard and fast vs an older man who’s likely learned cynical attitudes towards relationships. And whereas he could brush it off and move on, a heartbreak like that, at that age? It’s hell. To me, there’s something really weird about dating someone a decade younger when you’re 30 - like, you’re almost certainly going to jerk the younger one around emotionally whether you intend to or not. Incidentally, after hearing the line about his lovers staying the same age, I looked up who we think this song is about, and yeah - dude has a pattern. Maybe you can say they both have a perspective, but I don’t know. I think if you purposefully pursue a much younger partner, repeatedly, you probably like the power dynamics of that kind of relationship and that makes you the more problematic person IMO.

The color “Red” as TAYLOR represents it as a journey, from falling in love, the thrill of it and the heartbreak and the healing. Taylor wrote major chunk of Red during her Speak Now (2010 album) tour in 2011. All too Well was inspired by her relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. She went on performing it with teary eyes and it became a fan favourite because of the intricate story telling. Taylor later revealed that there was a 10 minute explicit version which she never released until now we get the re-recordings and she gave us what we needed.

Alot of the details of the story are mentioned in other songs. That he hated her humor. Told her not to wear heels eventhough she liked it. Told her her music was 'uncool'. He felt he was "the intellectual one" and talked down to her.

The scarf thing can be both literal and metaphorical... she used to wear that scarf a lot when they were seen hanging out while dating and until now he didn't give it back to her (since she forgot it)... AND it represents that she lost her virginity with him, she even sings "you keep my old scarf bc it reminds you of innocence"

It seems like at the time, Jake felt a little embarrassed about dating the teeny bopper Taylor was during this era even though they had the same witty sense of humour and definitely had a connection (She was in her "Princess dress" cowboy boots, purity ring wearing-era on the cover of Seventeen magazine) and I can imagine the weirdness he might have felt outwardly dating someone that kind of image and I'm sure that his friends etc, might have been in his ear or at least being judgemental about their relationship and that in turn reflected on how he treated her. There's a photo of Jake raging in the car angrily gesturing at paparazzi on the internet with Taylor in the passenger seat and that's reflected in the part where he gets out the car and talking on the phone. He seemed really angered with having "evidence" of him being with Taylor that he just doesn't really have anymore with people he dates. And the upside-down kiss near the end montage references his Spiderman kiss with Kirsten Dunst . 🤧

I love Dylan O'Brien since the Maze Runner. Such a down to earth gut and he did such a good job playing the villain here.

This song is basically Swiftie's anthem at this point. Taylor said that the fans changed her perspective of the song, from feeling pain everytime she play this on stage, to remembering us screaming the lyrics and crying our heart together with her. I remember first time I listen to this song, I can picture it in my head because the 5 minutes version was already detailed. And now with this short film, I finally can see the whole picture moving (especially with the line dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light), thats exactly how I picture it on the song.

I don't know is anyone has commented this yet, but the scarf is actually a real thing. There are paparazzi pics of Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal back when they were dating, she is wearing a scarf and there are smiling and holding hands. Then, months after they broke up, paparazzis took pictures of Jake wearing the same scarf. The original version of this song is a fan favourite (and widely known by fans and critics as Taylor's best song ever) and when Taylor released Red in 2012, she mentioned that the original draft of this song was 10 minutes long. Now that she has to rerecord her music, fans were begging her to put the original version of this song on the album, so she made a short film to thank the fans because everyone LOVES this song. In the Red Tour she used to cry while singing this song because it is really emotional to her, but she has said many times now that fans scream the lyrics so loud every time that she perfoms it, that it has really become a song about her relationship with fans.

an oath is something you're proud/willing to take, and it comes with consequences if you break it. but a secret is the opposite, it often has a negative connotation attached; there are *different consequences if you 'break' it. the lines that get me are the 'called to break me like a promise (kind of a middle ground between an oath and a secret). so casually cruel in the name of being honest (which imo is a form of gaslighting so).' there is so much to unpack in this song. i think, as we should, people are going to be talking about it for a while.

it's actually the real life story of her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, not just a random illustration. That makes this film even more heartbroken 💔🥺 and that scarf is like a memory of her that Jake didn't return 'til now, that last part, where he was seen wearing the scarf Taylor left at his sister's house.

“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath” makes me think of the times of knights. Their oaths were everything to them. Full of love, loyalty, and sacrifice. A secret is something you keep hidden, usually because you are ashamed of it. These are definitely two widely different perspectives. That is why this line hits me so hard! I love your reactions! It definitely takes brains (and a beard😉) to dissect Taylor’s lyrics.

The scarf is literal and a metaphor for her virginity. He can never give it back. Also the entirety of the red album is about Jake. Begin again is her basically saying all the mean things he’d say to her and how she thought it was normal until she met someone else that showed her what being a gods guy was.

I feel like a moment of seeing both sides isn't exactly fair. If you date a 20 year olds don't be surprised when they act their age, because you enjoy all the good parts, the idealization, attention and love, but can't handle the need for support.

I really love it when you guys emphasize how when relationship ends its like almost severed from your identity and when you mentioned how it was like shedding a weight and taylor later on saying "i'm a soldier who's returning half her weight. ITS SOOOO ON POINT. And the fact that it happened when you are young it could be very traumatizing and life changing - changing your perspective and identity its sooo true. I had my share of experiencing this kind of heartbreak and it DOES change you.

This was Taylor’s story when she had a major heartbreak with her ex. He was like 11 years older. She chose the actors from the video and they’re same ages as her and her ex at the time. She’s the director and writer of the short film as well. All too well 10 minute version was the original for her Red album but they had to cut the length, all her fans always knew about it and always asked for it so she finally was able to share the whole song plus and video which was amazing and heartbreaking as well.

even though the hand thing was unintentional and like he was trying to catch up with his friends, the way he handled the situation was d1sg@stint.He was gaslighting her and making her think she is crazy and selfish, and bcs he is so much older than her , his words have a huge impact on her

I think your analysis of the story presented in the film is one of the most thorough and complex compared to the other people who have reacted or analyzed the plot. It was really because of their age difference, which is still ridiculous and Jake Gyllenhaal really messed up with that. I believe that Taylor really loved him back then and because it was rare, red (passionate) and new to her who was still a young girl at the time, it really broke her. He probably broke up with her because he saw that he can't match with someone so young, especially one that seems to love him while he wasn't that much in love with her. But the big issue was that, he had slept with her. After he slept with her, he decided that they don't match. At least that's how the story is presented here. That's why the line "your lovers stay my age" really hits, because if that's how he sees relationship (based on the compatibility of sex attraction while denying the emotional connection) then he will continue the cycle on and on. In a way, the video gave a subtle commentary on how men (or a man) could and would behave like that and it keeps going on, almost never stopped.

I love how you two approach the relationship in the story without siding too hard with one character. That strikes me as kind and also a good way of critical thinking when approaching a work of fiction. I think it is easier to do that when you separate the story from its inspiration, like if you were to call the characters... uh... Brandon and Shelby! (In an interview, Dylan O'Brien elegantly dodged a question about Jake Gyllenhaal and jokingly claimed his character was named Brandon. I read somewhere that Scott and Andrea Swift considered naming their daughter Shelby, but they thought "Shelby Swift" sounded too much like the sentence "she'll be swift" and they thought it sounded weird.)

the colours in the film are very representative. the colour yellow/golden was almost always on Sadie because of her innocence and affection for Dylan. and on Dylan there was almost always a blue light reflecting the bitter cold side of teh relationship. and overall the red for love and the thrill of it, also for the heartbreak.

I actually really liked the way you guys discussed the table scene, because you’re the first people I’ve seen, who understood where both people were coming from, because, like both of you, I don’t think either of them were completely wrong, or either of them were completely right. The scene with the plates was so interesting to see, cause it seemed like he was adding more and more plates like a symbolization of adding on to her plate as he keeps making her feel more and more crazy when it's exactly how you guys pointed out a gaslightening which is some sort of manipulation.. cause if you love someone you acknowledge the feelings of on another and talk it out. relationships are never easy... they may start easy but eventually we have to deal with many things in companionship as life goes on and emotions come and go... plus the power dynamic between an older male and a young female is very much toxic imo. i don't wanna generalize at all.. i bet in some cases it can work but overall i feel like it's such a twilight zone of love.. one "crack in the glass" as you cleverly called it and it can end in abuse (emotioanlly or even further) which is also seen in Johnny Depp & Amber Heard's case where surprisingly she uses her being a young (pretty) female against him... & that happens A LOT as well.. Her age does matter because in my 30’s I, or she, would’ve been able to make sure she was joining the conversation and getting to know his friends. It’s learning how to work a room and give your significant other space to enjoy his friends, and you meet them and have fun getting to know them too. About the part where he drops her hand, I don’t think that was actually subconscious on his part like he tried to say during their argument. His body language during that scene is extremely deliberate. He doesn’t just “drop her hand”, he actually *moves it away* from him too. To me, it looked like he intentionally pushed her away and later tried to pretend as if he didn’t remember it in order to make her feel like she was being crazy.
