Joe was not crazy. He was the opposite. He was so boring and seemed to always be sad. The song is technically about her fans reaction to her dating Matty Healy last May. Everyone had an opinion and she’s saying it’s her life and she’ll make the decisions, even if it’s not the best decision. No one should tell her what to do or who to date. Btw, so crazy fans also try to find things on Travis so she’ll stop dating him. They want to run her life and honestly I don’t know how she stays sane.

One theory is that the first sections is about Matty. She writes "its over" and then describes a happier situation where the guy is loved = travis

6:59 I interpret this song to be about the judgemental crazies, swifties included that online and publicly judged her relationships. I feel the song goes through several relationships she's had ending with the last part of the song being about Travis. Yes, her dad likes him. To sum it up Taylor knows what's best for Taylor.

This song is about her being upset with her fans for hating Matty Healy and saying she was too good for him. She was in love, and it’s her life, so she resented people being so harsh and judgmental. Edited to add that you should exchange the word daddy, for Swifties. It’s not referring to her parents at all. And, like I said, it’s about Matty, NOT Joe. If you google “controversial things Matty Healy has said or done” you’ll understand the reaction to her dating him. Swifties want to protect her, but ultimately, at the end of the day, she’s a grown woman in her mid thirties, and it’s her life. Now that you know the story, take another listen.

She is mad at her fans that went on a "speaknow/speakup" to stop dating him after she broke up with Joe during the Eras Tour. They were only publicly dating for a short time (fortnight)....ok I am obviously making assumptions, but if you go back and watch the Fortnight video, you will see the Easter egg of The Black Dog....more assumptions that song is also about Matty. Jason, just so you know, quite a bit of this new album is about her quick relationship with Matty Healy from the band 1975 who she rebound dated after her 6 year relationship with Joe. Matty and Taylor had a friendship (and maybe dated) all the way back in the 1989 era (2014). After Joe she reconnected with Matty and he really broke her heart. Even thought it was a quick relationship, it sounds like he was talking about marriage and babies with her and really made her fall for him. She is talking about the Swifties bitching and moaning about her dating Matty. Your cousin was on the right track with her comments on this song. She just went in thinking it was about Joe, not Matty but great job cousin! Matty was not a good guy. I think when she wrote it, this was what she was hoping would be their future. Also think of “Daddy” as her fans. Not her actual dad.

In this song, "Daddy" = swifties who are hating on Matty Healy. (A bunch of swifties signed an open letter that basically tried to blackmail Taylor into getting rid of that guy. Some swiftie podcasters were screaming about Taylor "burning down her brand" by dating Matty. Hence Taylor's reference to burning her whole life down.) Most of the songs on this album are inspired by Matty. The only one that is clearly inspired by Joe is "Goodbye London". (But all assumptions are dangerous because she is a poet using metaphors, etc. so characters can be blended from various inspirations and fictionalized.) One line that confused me for a while: "They want to save you because they hate you”. But now I think she is referring to all the Christian fundamentalists who keep warning the world about Taylor. Especially the "Christian nationalists" (Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best")- they hate the left-leaning people like Taylor - they want to "save your soul" because they literally hate you and want to convert you to their politics.

It's pretty interesting how much fundamentalist religious imagery is in this song - so early on you were correct about how there are lots of boxes (cages) that young women get forced into just by social norms. "Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best ... clutching their pearls" - Sarah and Hannah are very common names in fundamentalist homes. Braids are often required for young girls in fundamentalist religious homes. Also elders (typically old men) make group decisions about how the people in their congregations should act and be punished if they don't conform. Young girls are often taught to be 'sweet' and to 'obey' - 'dutiful daughter' - 'precocious' but not really an adult - not allowed to grow up with full autonomy - having the elders decide for you. Girls that don't conform are shunned by the group (wine moms still holding out). Lots of religious language: save you, sanctimonious, disgrace, pray for me. So while it probably has a lot to do with past relationships - there is a lot here that has to do with how fundamentalism in the US is taking over and how that affects women - how women are being forced back to the 'wild west' (google the 1864 abortion law in Arizona - wild west era "I forget how the west was won") in terms of losing our rights to make decisions about our lives and our bodies... I could be wrong - but that is how it struck me immediately - she is such a feminist and this is really a feminist anthem

The line I rather burn my own house down is a clap back to her fans because it was Swifties that were posting stuff that she shouldn't date so and so. She calls it out more than once in the song to say stay in your lane.

I think this song is generally an FU to fans for all the backlash with Matty - which was crazy. Some fans actually wrote an open letter demanding she break up with him. She's saying it's my life; my choice. It applies to Matty relative to the backlash, but then I think it also applies to Travis and the backlash she got when he lost his temper during the Super Bowl.

Daddy = (not her real father) It is directly released to her crazy fans who actually started petitions for her to stop dating Matty Healy. They bitched and moaned about how bad he was for her. The fans were also telling Matty to leave Taylor alone. The relationship only lasted - FOR A FORTNIGHT. 2 WEEKS. It was a few months after Joe (and also alleged back in 2014). The “I’m having his baby” part was literally 100% trolling all of the fans who thought they knew what was best for her. No baby. Pure Taylor trolling those “vipers in empath clothing”. She truly wanted to see their faces at that part. (Yes, she had an absolutely idealistic childhood). She’s telling her fans to stay out of her business and that she’s going to date who she wants to. Period. The follow up songs to this are: The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived AND I Can Fix Him (No really, I Can). Aka: he was not good for her. But she didn’t need nor want her fans to interfere with her love life. “Down Bad” is on the set list. So is “TSMWEL”.

I think the spot where you saw Taylor supposedly clapping for the wrong team was when she clapped for a play that Kyle Juszczyk was involved in. Being that his wife Kristin made her a special jacket, it only seems right to clap for a new friend regardless of team. Just a thought! ☺️

I think that you have to get over the mindset that most songs on the album are about Joe. Actually, most of the songs about Matt Healy. They knew each other 10 years ago and briefly rekindled the relationship in 2023. It did not work out and it hurt Taylor deeply. Fans chiming in with their opinions and demands that she dump him irritated Taylor enough to write this song to basically tell them to step back or ef off. It was not really about her parents.

This song is Taylor breaking the 4th wall telling everyone to shut up, she was upset at the fans reaction to her dating Matty Healy, so the "bitching and moaning" was at the fans having a go about him, saying he wasn't good enough etc. Most of this album is about her relationship with him.

Oh my. Point completely missed about why girls are 'caged'. Wavy I still don't believe this song about Matty I believe it is about Travis because of how the song ends. When she started dating Travis everyone was saying he wasn't good enough and a football player that wouldn't stay fateful. Also talking about who he dated in the past and if you listen to the lyrics she calls out every one of those points in this song. The reason I don't think it is about Matty is because when they came back together it was to short and I doubt her dad was still happy about the relationship to be in love with him. Even in the lyric when she says they didn't hear the comments because the tires were screeching tires when Taylor and Travis left the first football game in his convertible there were people saying they were concerned because she didn't do that and leave herself open.

I find your interpretations really odd. The setting of the song is like in old westerns, when the family never approved of their daughters boyfriends. 'But Daddy I love hm' was often a line. The meaning of the song is absolutely nothing to do with Joe, it's about falling for someone who everyone thinks is unsuitable and think they have a say in it. You take the lyrics too literal i.e. I'd rather burn my own house down... That means she'd rather end her career than have anyone dictate who she can have a relationship with. Also 'they raise you just to break you' is nothing to do with her parents it's the same business - you are built up then knocked down.

The song is about Travis (which is why it ends with her happy being with him) but mainly how everyone thinks they have the right to an opinion on who she's with. There was a lot of criticism when she started dating Travis, people saying she was a distraction and ruining football ect ect. The "bitching and moaning" is all the people who always have something to say. The empaths dressed in vipers clothing who say they want whats best for me.
