Lover nunca fue un album de amor y romance hacia joe, aunque obvio que algunas canciones fueron escritas para el, pero el album es mas que eso. Lover es un disco que trata sobre todos los tipos de amor, ya sea romance, amistades, familiares, y el amor propio. No hay que rebajar el album a simplemente "la era donde Taylor estuvo en negación"
