This song was the first single off Reputation...Taylor had 'disappeared' after the whole Kanye and Kim heavily edited video that made it look like Taylor was lying (since vindicated with the release of the whole video), the backlash Taylor got was huge, she dropped off the radar for a year or so, then wiped all her social media, posted some snake images (Kim Kardashian called her a snake at the time and the Taylor haters went mad on it) and then dropped this single and video with no explanation or press...as comebacks go it was an awesome, bombastic f you to all the crap that was thrown at her... it's far from my favourite Taylor Swift song but I love it for what it is and I think the video is phenomenal 🐍

This is absolutely meant to be played in a stadium. I would never listen to this song on the album, but I LOVE the live performance of it. I also enjoy the music video. I feel the same about a lot of the songs on Reputation. I’m hoping that the production on Rep TV is better. This song is about Kayne pretending to be a friend all while setting her up to be canceled.

Not about Scooter this time but the part where she is lifting the two motorcycles is a hint of how she carried Scott Borchetta's Big Machines recordcompany. The canary in a gold cage surrounded by a lot of characters dressed as Despicable Me might be a dig too. This is mainly about Kanye West and his then wife Kim Kardashian who edited a tape to have Taylor branded as a liar and Kim had her minions cyberbully Taylor, calling her a snake. At one point she was contemplating suicide. It was later discovered that she wasctelling the truth, but she disappeared for a year and came back with fewer illusions and the album reputation. This is considered one of the best comeback songs in history.

watching this video with none of the backstory and context is a crime lol 😅 kanye literally made a naked s3x doll of her and put it in bed with him while singing "taylor and me might still have s3x, why? i made that b*tch famous". He called her on the phone to ask her if she could promote this new song on her twitter. She awkwardly and politely declines and thanks him for letting her know she's mentioned in the song. He never tells her that the lyric "I made that b*tch famous" are in the song. Those words do not leave his mouth once. Kim is taking a video of this phone call. (illegal in California to record a private phone call). Taylor does not know she's being recorded. The song is released, Taylor is rightly disgusted by the lyrics and her naked body on display. She voices her disappointment. Kim posts an edited video of the phone call, chopped up, leaving out vital pieces of the call. She claims online and on her reality show that Kanye called to tell Taylor the line and she heard it and approved it. (A thing which never happened.) She claims that Taylor is lying. She calls her a snake on national snake day online 🐍 🐍 🐍 # Taylor is Over Party trends. Snake emojis flood her Instagram. Media agrees with Kim, on The View they say she's playing the victim for attention and she saw it as an opportunity and thought people would go along with her. Many celebs bullied her on social media. Fans turned on her. She thought her career was over. She disappears from public life for a year. Everything on her social media was deleted and then she dropped videos of snakes. no one knew reputation was coming yet. She drops the album Reputation and the music video Look What You Made Me Do which directly addresses it all. ❤️🐍 around 2020 the full call is leaked. In it, you can see the entire call and as I've said, Taylor was always telling the truth. Kanye never mentions the lines or the disgusting S3X DOLL, which it seems no one wants to ever talk about. Kanye was 39 in 2016 when this happened. Kim was 36 years old at the time. Taylor Swift was 27 then. Swift is 34 now and Kim is 43. Taylor said when releasing TTPD that there are no more scores to settle, etc. This is a closing of the entire book series that was the first 10 albums. (ending with thanK you aIMee). It's closure. 🤍 "I don't like your tilted stage, Kanye. how you laugh when you lie." also, there's several other things in this video, one of the graves at the beginning has the name of her pseudonym she used when she released the song That's What You Came For with Calvin Harris and Rihanna. the one-dollar Bill next to the bathtub she's laying in represents when she won her sexual assault case, a radio DJ touched her while taking a picture with her, he lost his job when she spoke up and he sued her for millions of dollars, so she countersued and won for only $1. she spoke about it on stage before singing Clean and it was in the Miss Americana documentary. lastly, obviously opinions on art are subjective, so what music we each like and don't like is personal, for me personally this song is amazing and the video is phenomenal. I LOVE this song. and I'm a 30 year old woman who grew up listening to hardcore music and my favorite bands of all time are Dance Gavin Dance and Bright Eyes. I can't help it, I'm obsessed with Taylor swift, the last year I went down the rabbit hole and realized she's a genius, even the things that sound like shallow pop bangers are still better than her contemporaries. there's always more there. and i love the production!! just different taste. ✌️

You're exactly right. I was never really that into this song, or the album at first except a few songs. Watched the rep tour online, thought, ok I get the point. But then I went to see Eras, not even the actual show, just the concert film in a theater. Still, I put on cryptic little pins for my favorite albums, and a blue sweater to celebrate 1989tv, felt like such a fan, and a significant portion of the audience was singing along to every song. All of it was great fun, but the whole rep set just hit like nothing else, this song included. I think I actually cried a little and it's not even sad - it was just such a strong feeling of crowd connection, made me feel swept up and in the moment. As an aside I have high hopes for RepTV. Taylor's voice on this tour is just so much better than even 2020, much less 2017 - more expressive and more powerful. Plus, 1989TV has been harshly critized for its production compared to the og, much more so than any of the other rerecords, which is exactly the kind of thing Taylor might take as a challenge. She'll still closely match the original tracks of course so it won't help those who absolutely loathe what she's going for, but I really think some slight adjustments could make a ton of difference here, especially for the more repetitive parts. My favorite extra content for this music video is this making-of snippet which beautifully mirrors a very cutesy bts scene of ME! (from the lover album), where Taylor meets and adopts her third cat ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l9nZO4nW_IM.html

You should watch the live performance of this from the Eras tour and see if you prefer that production. It is way less electronic and more guitar and drum based, it totally elevates the song to another level

Kelly Clarkson actually gave Taylor the idea to rerecord her sold catalogue. Either there is a written record of this on Twitter/Instagram, or Taylor has given Clarkson credit for the idea, which is solid. Taylor then going and doing all of that rerecording in studio still makes her an absolute beast 🥰

If you would have watched to the very end, there was a line of different eras of Taylor's, one says, whats with that b!tch, and zombie Taylor says don't call me that, which is a reference to Kanye's lyric I made that b!tch famous, in his Famous song, which started the whole thing.

I've never liked this song either. And it put me off the Reputation album for YEARS which I'm so cross about now because most of the rest of the album is fantastic. And it's one of her few albums that sounds SO MUCH better live than it does on the studio recording. I get it all thematically with the whole Kim/Kanye thing. This was her first clap-back track at them... But I feel like she's just done this so much better on other songs by this point that I don't need to put myself through this song more than humanly necessary 😂

I both agree and disagree with you. Sure it’s not a great song and at face value it’s an overproduced pop song. But with all of Taylor’s catalog, it’s part of the overarching story of her life as told through music. It’s hard to describe to a new listener how it felt when this video and album dropped. Her social media had disappeared and then boom, a few snakes on Instagram and the Reputation album. A lot of us thought she had lost her mind. This was only her 2nd true pop album. She was feeling like a hurt, caged animal lashing out at Kanye/Kim, Scott Burchetta of her record label who wouldn’t sell her masters, the backlash of her fighting for artists’ fair pay in the new (at the time) streaming services and everyone just making fun of her for every damn thing. This album and the subsequent tour is pure dramatic theatre. The media said she couldn’t actually fill a stadium when this tour was announced, so it’s unclear if she was writing and producing with that in mind. I think she was going for bombastic and unhinged. If you haven’t watched the documentary on Netflix, Miss Americana, it tells a lot of this story. Personally it’s not my fav, but live? She will crush your soul with it as much as she does with any of her saddest songs.

For me, it's a fun song, but it doesn't make me feel anything, so it isn't a favorite, and that's how I feel about a lot of Reputation--fun AF, but not as deep as some of her other work. Folklore, Evermore, TTPD, Midnights, and (newly for me) Red are my go-tos for all the feels.

Is that a Pedro the Lion shirt you're wearing? Love David Bazan. Look What You Made Me Do is an interesting song because it has such potential to take off at the chorus into something that kicks ass, but it stays even and ends up being overly repetitive. It doesn't kill the entire song for me though. It did take me a long time to appreciate it, which was only because of the video and the live performances on both the reputation and Eras tours.

The song isn’t a good song. But every artist has those songs that a “for the fans” and this is one for those who do want to dig deep into the lore. A few years ago, I saw Springsteen at Etihad in Manchester. Loads of fans when walking home said it was a terrible set list. It wasn’t. But it was an obscure set list: those who have dug deep into his back catalogue loved the gig. Those who’d mainly listened to Dancing in the Dark and Born to Run didn’t get it. And that’s OK. This is most definitely one of Taylor’s marmite songs and that’s OK.

I might get angry at first coz you don't like the song at all, but then I realize that this song is not for everyone. It's for the hardcore Swifties who knew what happened during this time in her life. Why she made this song. Why she disappeared for a year following that stupid Snake-gate. I know it's not for everyone. I'm kinda disappointed ya don't like it as a song, but I hope you enjoyed the music video though hehe
@kayemm1973

As a song it's meh, I'm not who it was aimed at demographically. It's a Taylor song that is part of the lore, so Swifties get to angry sing/feel sad on her behalf etc etc etc and live it's dramatic but yeah having seen her progression to Folklore/Evermore/TTPD which show her skills better I'd be happy to not see her do this type of track again post eras. Sooo true about it being Black Eyed Peas-alike. Black eyed peas with a wronged woman back story.

This is the diss song of diss songs and her clap back against media and all the haters. Don’t be so fast to overlook some of Taylor’s songs just because they have a pop sound and more production. There’s a lot more to them. Just not as obvious as in songs like my tears ricochet. Sometimes piano and strings are needed to convey what you’re saying. Sometimes heavy production with a lot of drums and base….
