Taylor's actually talking about John Mayer in this song! John Mayer dated Taylor in 2009 when Taylor was 19 and he was 32. It was a very mismatched relationship age-wise. In this song, Taylor describes being emotionally abused by John and John leaving wounds on her that were so deep that they won't close, even though it's been more than a decade. John hurt her so badly that Taylor feels like John took her innocence, aka her girlhood, and warped her perception of what love is, and how she thinks she deserves to be treated :( Taylor also has another song called “Dear John” which is also about John Mayer, and she also describes emotional abuse in that song as well. She released that song back in 2010! It'd be cool if you guys reacted to her live performance of “Dear John” from the Speak Now Tour! Dear John and Would've Could've Should've tie into each other very well since they're both about the same person! Jake didn't date Taylor until she was 20! I'm so happy you guys decided to react to this song! It's definitely one of her most heartbreaking and well-written songs! 💗💗
Nothing Taylor does is by accident. She was 19 and he was 32. She released this song when she was 32 and it was track 19. Also, the girlhood line seems to hit women harder than men. That line makes me cry everytime because it just hits so close to home!
I wanted to grow up so badly in high school and looking back now at 24 I’m so saddened for my younger self. 16 year olds aren’t supposed to feel mature because adults are interested in them.
This one is about John Mayer, it’s like Dear John with years of life lessons. When she talks about the stained glass windows, John lived in an old church that had stained glass windows…👀
This song to me is about realizing that someone you thought you loved ruined a really good, pure, innocent piece of you, and you'll never get it back, and you can't forget it, or forgive it, but you realize it now.
This song is her reflection on her relationship with John Mayer now. She wrote Dear John back then when he first broke her heart. Definitely worth listening to hear how young Taylor called him out versus grown Taylor. For reference, she was 19 and he was 32.
I recently read the book My Dark Vanessa which is about the relationship that a 15 yrs girl had with her 45 yrs old teacher and all of its repercussions. That book is this song.
This song is one of my favorite tracks on Midnights. It’s such a powerful song. It was written about John Mayer. You guys should listen to Dear John off Taylor’s 3rd album, Speak Now.
When u said that she brings the emotions out and we can feel the pain. Its so true and I’m so glad you noticed that in her writing. That’s what we swifties live for. Her lyrics mean everything ❤ Thank you for making these reaction videos to her songs. 😊
Her writing is also amazing because it’s called would’ve could’ve should’ve, but she only says would’ve and could’ve because in dear John she says “ you should’ve known” and that’s because both these are songs are about John Mayer. And they in dear John it was how she felt then but now she looking back at that time and that’s what this song is about and they are both connected. I’m not sure if I made sense in this explanation but she’s just so awesome with how she connects things, to her other writing. Also John Meyer was 32 and she was 19. Also when she says you made me feel important, if you look up some of his interviews he use to talk in about how amazing and like a child she was and called her a little angel, and would talk her up making her feel important.
Great reaction, guys! Jeremiah's face after starting the song was priceless and Johnny's puzzle metaphor was spot on! Taylor is really working on making people remember what a great writer/lyricist she is and love her for the way her mind works. Thank you :)
Johns house was a church, thats the stained glass windows, she wrote this and released it when John was 32,they were both at an awards show.John tried to sue Taylor for these songs to be taken down.Travis says he is a Swifftie but he showed up for a date with a john mayer shirt on,how did he not know about this, guess he was busy listening to john
It just hurts that this song is about her losing her virginity to a man who was abusing her. "Give my back my girlhood it was my first." Danced with the devil aka the devil's tango... and he used it to manipulate and ensnare her. disgusting.
I love listening to “Dear John” and then this song because you can hear the difference in the pain and the torture that has haunted her for so many years
In this video, we can see your facial expressions change during that one lyric “give me back my girlhood, it was mine first”. I applaud you both for doing these reactions. A lot of guys out there still think it’s “cool” to hate on Taylor Swift for some reason so seeing you both enjoy her music and compliment her writing is hella refreshing.
Being able to listen to Taylor and hear her stories is fascinating. She is the best story teller the music industry has ever seen. For guys who hate on her are just jealous with her success and the way she has been able to handle it. Most people would crumble and give up. We are glad you are enjoying our reactions. Thank you for supporting us😎😎
This song is on the perspective of now 32 year old matured Taylor on what happened with John Mayer. She was only 19 when John Mayer was 32 at that time. You guys must check out 'Dear John'. You'll see how a 19 year old called out John.
Great reaction guys, as everyone has told you John Mayer came first she was only 19 and he was about 32, and he is still dating younger, the same as Jake G. Taylor was 20 almost 21 when with Jake, when he broke it off it was around her 21st b'day, and that is why we have a song called "22".
I personally feel like John Mayer is her worst ex and her talking about emotional abuse I definitely relate to that considering my ex fiancée was emotionally abusive and made my family feel so awkward he’d flirt with other women right in front of me sometimes he’d try flirting with my family and friends and they’d shut him down yelling him your girl is right there wtf is wrong with you my family don’t play when it comes to that shit and if I got mad about it what the hell is wrong with you or if a guy said thank you because I said I liked his tattoo or they opened a door for me and smiled at me I got the oh so your sleeping with them or so what you prefer him over me so I really understand the emotional abuse and narcissism this song and dear John there not my favorites but I love the lyrics and how she can paint a picture with her words alone
You guys are so funny, the song hadn't even started and I couldn't stop laughing. By far the best part of your channel is that you can always makes us smile but guys also know when to get serious and emotional.
I'm sorry guys but when I need a smile or laugh when I'm looking at reactions I always have to stop and listen to this particular reaction. Your both great. ❤
For me the meaning of the words "would've could've should've" is for emphasis but also each word is slightly different... Would've means that it was smth that she was probably going to do but another thing stopped it from happened or changed her mind. For me the world would've is usually associated with the word "but". Like i would've done this but..... Could've just means that there was an option. Like i could do this or i could do that Should've is the most significant word for me. It gives the impression of looking at smth in hindsight and realizing that it was there wrong destination. The correct thing would be was should've be done or choosen
Jake came after John Mayer when she was in her early 20s. She wrote Dear John and when she was 32 (same age as John when they dated) she released this song. It's like reflecting back.
You know, I’m not discounting the facts that their “relationship” was a total train wreck and it was ultimately his responsibility to not get involved with a freaking 19 year old but from what I’ve seen online, he’s always expressed nothing but admiration and complete respect for her as a person and an artist. Who knows….maybe he fell for her and it was just as unexpected as it was for Taylor. Idk that’s just one way of looking at it
Still irresponsible though, she didn’t know better, he stayed in the industry for years :/ He might loved her, might not, but we all have that someone/something in our memories that bruised our brightest years, and this song hits hard like that, a gaping wound won’t close in our regrets.
