It makes sense if they started off as friends, then had benefits and then were together. A lot of the lyrics from Reputation made it seem like they were being secretive and I wasn't sure if that was from the media or because she was still with Tom (as she mentions in Gorgeous). And I wasn't sure when one ended and one started. But if this is the real story, the music makes more sense. It's really hard that just when a girl found the love she'd been searching, it would just be gone because of many past relationships (maybe can't avoid the serious ones that nearly reached the altar, but the casual ones leave a different meaning). Not for anything else, it's like a movie plot where a man from a decent, respectable family brought home a girl to his family to say he's getting married, of course there would be background checks, and her past caught up with her & wedding went kaput. It's said nothing is kept a secret forever, and people have different perceptions if they can live with it or not. If they can weather the ridicule, lambasting, loss of respect to their person by others, etc. that they would be exposed to but if not, they would leave. Reputation is as important as one's person, it precedes oneself and such, like love is so delicate, that must be protected always.
