I just love how the lyric "Shade never made anybody less gay!" has a double meaning: 1) the one we all know, throwing shades at the LGBT community doesn't make anyone less gay (for me).. and that sort of meaning. 2) if you didn't know, the word "Gay" in ancient English meant "bright" and "joyful".. Therefore, this lyric can mean; Shadows never made people any less bright. I think it means that going through bad times and situations doesn't take away your brightness. And no matter what you've been through, you're always bright and beautiful. It's a sarcastic line but with another beautiful meaning in its depth. And I don't know if Taylor intended that, but I love it so much.

This song is the perfect response to everyone who spends their time and effort into hating others who did absolutely nothing personal to them. Like, are you okay?
