This golf irons comparison takes a look at the TaylorMade P770 irons and Titleist T100S irons, both falling in between the players and players-distance iron categories. Each was designed with a compact shape that better players demand, but with some added explosiveness.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Thomas Campbell conduct a golf irons comparison with Trackman technology to identify the differences between the TaylorMade P770 irons and Titleist T100S irons.

Hi guys, sorry for the late comment. I've been playing the 2020 P770's since they were launched. They've been amazing but they still have that flier in there. Recently fitted for the T100S and fell in love. Never clicked with an iron like it. Was looking to return to playing blades but the T100s are just the most stunning irons. ZX7 performed well but it came down to looks and feel in the end.....T100S won hands down!

Amazing how close these were!! Great video guys, I have just bought a set of P770's to replace my Honma TR20v's which have been a great club, but just looking for something with a tiny bit more forgiveness. When tested I did hit the the stock ones very high, too high so the lofts have been made a degree stronger and have got my normal shafts in there as well (Nippon Tour 105 Modus ) which is a shaft I have fitted for several times now and love. They have arrived in shop now so off t pick them up tomorrow 🙂

I've been a TM iron guy for 15 years, currently gaming the original P770's which are fine, but I played with a guy at my course with the new 770's and absolutely loved the looks. Took one swing with a 6 iron, hit my target (flew a few yard farther than my current 770) and was sold. I'm a 3.3 so I can pretty much hit any club, more dependant on the feel and weight of the shaft, and of course looks, since I'm a shallow guy!. The new 770's will be coming in March. They probably won't lower my handicap, that will depend on chipping on putting!

Always interesting to see how people say the P770 goes further because of speedfoam with a degree less loft. I think credit must also be given to Titleist for creating a stronger lofted iron that is not super long but rather launch higher and spin more to give same numbers as weaker lofted clubs.

Good comparison guys, thx. I've been looking forward to this one. I'm going to guess the 'difference' in these clubs would show up more with a less consistent and/or slow swing. They are both on my radar though and this has just confirmed why. Cheers.

Hey guys, really glad you put these head to head, and Thomas did a great job repeating as always. As somebody who has always played Titleist irons (AP2s and recently T100) and just got fit for P770s I thought I'd add some comments that might help. The reason that I got fit for some new sticks was I am a very high spin player, and struggle with a very high, floaty ball flight. I was a little higher swing speed at 95-96 mph but similar ball speed and spinning at 7600+ rpm since I hit down a few degrees more than Thomas' famous efficient path. In the end going from my trusty DG shafts to C Taper X flex with a P770 slightly strong put me up around 1.39-1.40 smash with better spin numbers. Basically I ended up with P770s in T100s lofts, and that just had a great spin number, height and decent angle. I personally didn’t see a real head size difference between the two, and although I have been loyal to Titleist the P770 was just money in that shaft on dispersion. The fitter threw in the Srixon ZX7s and I have to say they felt great, but for me they had higher spin even if the lofts were the same as the (28deg 6 iron, 32deg 7 iron). That will be a very interesting test I think. Maybe bend the P770 to 32 deg and put it back up against the T100s with the ZX7? I know those of us who need to knock down spin and height aren't very common, but for me those were the 3 to pick from. Great job and keep it coming!
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 2 года назад
Thanks for your take on your club fitting. AP2's and T100 irons have generally always spun higher than other models. So I am not surprised that you got less spin with P770. ZX7's generally are spin killers as well but it sounds like you still spun them too much. Those 3 would be a great test, maybe throw in Apex Pro that would also fit this category - Thomas

Mr. Mahowald you are dead on correct on your analysis. I just purchased a new set of T100s for that added extra distance because I am now in my mid-50s. I played Titliest CBs for ten years and was not getting the distance I did in my younger age. These T100s add a little yardage to my game. Right on the ball with your thoughts.

Got to try the T100s last week, loved the look, was very surprised just how easy they are to hit because the size was a little intimidating for me. Have tried the P770s in the past and again loved the look, very easy to launch. Of the two I prefer the feel of the T100s but prefer the slightly larger head of the P770s. The problem for both these clubs is the club I actually play - i210. In my hands the i210 spins noticeably more than P770s and T100s and only gives up less than 5 yards in distance to the P770 and a bit less to the T100s. Not seeing anything to make me change from my i210s but if I was looking for new irons both the T100s and P770s would be top of my list.
@2ndswing

Thanks for your feedback. Yes time and time again the i210's spin more and are very consistent which is hard to pass up, they may not go as far but if they go the same distance more often that is even better - Thomas

I was fit for T100s. You nailed it saying it’s for players who need to knock down spin, among other things. For me, it also helped keep the flight down (still launched 120 ft). My 6i SS is around 100 mph and my contact is good enough that I don’t need help with distance, but welcome the forgiveness here that gives a few extra yards on miss hits. I also needed a thin sole design since I pick the ball or get in and out quickly, so a club like T200 wasn’t even an option. It was this and the ZX7, with the Titleist winning out based on my delivery.

Hi Thomas! I am a picker with my irons and my swing flaws are coming over the top and also releasing the club too early. Sometimes way too early like 3 to 6 inches behind the ball. I tend hit the ground first on most shots and then drag the club along or through the turf. My brother and others don’t understand how I hit the ball as far as I do and how high I hit the ball even though I am hitting way behind the ball sometimes. I have always been a high ball hitter despite this swing flaw because I flip my right hand up and throw the ball in the air. When I was a better player I picked the ball clean or hit an inch or two behind the ball and still flipped it with my right hand. I am a high spin player. Anyways, this swing flaw is now worse and I am hitting 3 to 6 inches behind the ball pretty often. My brother, who is a pretty good iron player, thinks I need a wide sole super game improvement iron because of me hitting so far behind the ball. However, I have told him the few times I have tried wide sole irons that the irons tend to bounce off the turf and I hit lots of thin shots or hit the leading edge into the belly of the ball. I told my brother I actually think I would do better with an iron with a thinner sole than a wide sole. I recently saw a video on another channel where they say a thinner sole would be better for my swing flaw and with me being a picker on good shots. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, Joe. P.S. I hate lots of offset!! So I couldn’t play a super game improvement iron!!
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 2 года назад
Hi Joe thanks for reaching out. I agree that a club with the sole too big may make it harder for you as you hit up on the ball. I would consider the Cobra RAD Speed and Srixon ZX5 they are game improvement irons but the sole isn't as large. Your spin will drop with those irons. - Thomas

I got fitted earlier this year (I play off 5 and swing 7 iron around 85mph) and these two were in my top 3 (along with the Srixon ZX7s); in the end the P770s won out but only by a hair. I found them slightly more consistent, slightly faster off the face and slightly more forgiving than the T100s's and ZX7s, and also the P770s look stunning compared with the looks of the other two. Finally ditching my ego and moving from blades (TM MBs) to the P770s has made the game a lot easier and I'm seeing gradual scoring improvements since they were delivered 6 weeks ago. When talking about spin and or lack thereof, can you also show "descent" angle? That would or could make a big difference in making a decision on irons that have less spin. Great input and actually landing angle and height is important if you don't spin the ball as much but your landing angle is steep enough the stopping power will be adequate and you can pick up more distance. If I spun my 7 iron at 7000rpm I would carry the ball 10 yards less - Thomas

Hi Markus! These irons are pretty similar in terms of forgiveness. But what we have noticed is the X-Forged will go a little further with lower launch and spin. Hope this helps!

Totally agree, i had the previous version of t100s, the misshits were really penalized on distance, and eventhough it’s stronger loft, the xforged cb 2021 went further, both were using the kbs tour v stiff. Most of the test you’ve done really spot on!! Good job guys!!

@tonybytheway7543
@tonybytheway7543 2 года назад
@@sockjohnson I don't see why you'd need a new shaft fitting, just wether you like the heads and feel etc and to get the right lie/loft. I've had fittings at both Titleist and Mizuno and both identified the same shaft as right for me (i.e. Project X LZ's that I have in my HMP's at the mo). I like the T100s but on advice from my Pro (Mizuno specialist) I'm waiting to see and try the MP 223 and 225's before deciding. The T100's are surprisingly forgiving but in my opinion not as nice feeling as Mizuno's. With the copper underlay on both the new 223 and 225 they should feel soft but be forgiving and a little hot as well.

Would love to see this comparison done with someone that hits the ball a little more similar to me. I’m probably the guy your marketing this club to. I’m a 10 handicap with a driver swing speed in the low 100s, and like the look of a smaller iron. I just wish I could see what this will do for someone like me. Watching someone hit a 7 iron 180-190 yards with a 90+ mph swing speed is completely unrealistic to me! I would rather see realistic swing profile players with expert commentary!

people talk about workability but 90% of golfers can't even hit the ball straight. you don't need workability man. you already got it. you need something that will straighten out your ball so it doesn't go left or right. so stop trying to buy the blades and get the one that can actually improve your game. you drop over a grand on these and go out on to a golf course only to hit slices. hooks and shanks. and then you just might catch one semi clean and you say wow these are the greatest more pure feeling clubs I've ever hit. how stupid is that? just think about it. most people dont think straight, especially when it comes to golf.

when you do these "tests" are you putting the ball in the same spot every time and lining up your club head the same? and aligning your feet to address the ball the same? otherwise your accuracy comparison is absolutely meaningless

Sorry but these "VS" things from retailers suck us all in but are NEVER going to give you a real RECOMMENDATION ...why would they???- look at these - they're virtually the same with the differential being "chose Titleist or TaylorMade"..........simple as.............same distances'ish, same numbers'ish.......come on..... No Diss to 2ndswing trying to promote their business but as consumers ...... there is nothing to chose here really....
@SanjuroCA
@SanjuroCA 2 года назад
they dont give a recommendation because no one club is better for everyone. It's still informative because from the video we know that even tho they are very similar numbers-wise there are differences. in feel, club head size, spin. To the mid/higher handicapper those minor differences won't matter much but to a single digit handicapper they matter. Now ofc there will be those who will find that dont matter to them as much as pricing but at least it helps to make an informed decision.
@2ndswing
@2ndswing 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. It's important to remember the results will always be player dependent. Since the loft and technology is similar they will provide similar numbers. Visually these two are different and the golfer has to decide which one they like best but the numbers during their fitting has to make sense - Thomas
