I’m not going to address whether Maroon is about Matty or Joe - there’s circumstantial evidence suggesting it could be about either or both. But how “special” is it to keep singing a song that is ambiguous as to who it is about and contains the lyric “carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us.” In contrast, Mary’s Song was written about a couple who lived next door to Taylor and who had known each other for over fifty years and been together for more than forty years. When Taylor spoke about the song, she noted: “But it was really comforting to know that all I had to do was go home and look next door to see a perfect example of forever.” She apparently has never sung this song outside of her debut album performances, so it is not associated with any of her former boyfriends. Moreover, in So High School, she basically says that Travis has erased all the trauma associated with her past relationships and made her feel as giddy as a teenager. She also basically says that he’s the only one of her boyfriends who has ever known the “real” her. So, yeah, I would say on balance Travis won over Matty/Joe.

As for your comment that Travis's and Taylor's relationship is a "pr stunt," I'll charitably attribute your ignorance to a lack of life experience. Any emotionally mature adult can see from their body language, interpersonal relations, and actions towards each other that they are in a healthy, committed and loving relationship. And since it appears that you are a diehard Matty stan, I will at least concede that he deserves some credit for Travis's and Taylor's relationship. He helped Taylor realize that her relationship with Joe was a dead-end and that any potential relationship with him was a dead end as well, enabling her to let go of all her past what-ifs and if onlys.
