Through their skillful hands and deep-rooted passion, they continue to breathe life into the T'nonggong drum, ensuring that the Tboli Tribe's cultural heritage remains alive and thriving.
There are various rituals and ceremonies in which the T'nonggong drum plays a central role. The Tboli people believe that the drum serves as a channel to communicate with their ancestral spirits, invoking blessings, guidance, and protection. The T'nonggong drum, represents the Tboli Tribe's close connection to nature, their beliefs, and their vibrant cultural identity.
The Tboli have a variety of musical instruments to accompany singing and dancing or to be played just to produce music. Instrumental music is utom; vocal music is lingon. The sounds and music made by these instruments are said to imitate nature, such as the sound of the gushing river, falling rain, crying baby, and the shouting of men. An utom is titled according to the object it imitates; thus, utom luk mutul is the composition sound of the rice mill and utom tkak mnaul is the composition of the cackling of the mnaul bird). Utom are either handed down from their ancestors or improvised to express their own feelings and experiences.
Playing musical instruments is done both for leisurely purposes or special occasions. These instruments can be classified according to the way they are played: the tenbol ne bnogul (beaten and pounded instruments) are the klutang (log drum); tnonggong (deerskin drum); klintang, a set of eight gongs played by men and women on festive occasions; and the blowon gono smagi (suspended gongs). The nyuf (blown instruments) are the slolior bamboo flute; the few, a small horn made from a short section of rice stalk, around which a strip of palm leaf is wound in the form of a slender cone; and the slendeg (a long bamboo flute).
The Tboli, also known as T’boli, Tiboli, and Tagabili, are an indigenous people living in the southern part of Mindanao, particularly in the municipalities of T’boli, Surallah, Lake Sebu, and Polomolok in the province of South Cotabato and in Maasim, Kiamba, and Maitum in Sarangani. They can also be found in the neighboring provinces of Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, and Davao del Sur. There are four major lakes which are important to the Tboli: Sebu, the largest and the most culturally significant; Siluton, also called Seluton and Seloton, the deepest; Lahit, the smallest; and Holon, a crater lake of Mount Melibengoy in the municipality of T’Boli.
