Historical footnote: The day Wayne Gretzky went to St. Louis, February 27, 1996, was the day a pair of video games came out in Japan - _Pocket Monster Red & Green Versions._ The first Pokemon games first hit the shelves the day Gretzky was traded to the Blues.
Yeah thanks for reminding me....as I remember crying in front of the TV has a young boy. Still suffering to this day! But nevertheless......Go Blues Ride or Die!
Like Crosby to Ovi when Caps wons the Cup, best player does mistake sometimes. Where I live in Montreal, Mr. Price allowed some pee-wee goal every 3 games
reggie pathak: Good point. I have always wondered about that. Ultimately, I think they would have fell to Colorado in the WCF. The Avalanche were stacked that year, and were worthy SC Champions.
@@briancusack4386 I dont agree st louis had wings on the brink of elmnation with a bck up goalie. Wngs were almost eliminted in 6 by the blues and i ext round avs eliminated the wings in 6. Avs had more talent up front they were yonger but where blues had the advantage was the muckers and grinders noonan mattueau chreighton zezel ect thet were mcukers and grinders that could score here and there.
@@raj2007ca : Well, it would have been interesting. I think Patrick Roy would have been the difference, Reggie. Yes, the Blues had a lot of excellent muckers, and grinders (Matteau; Noonan; Chreighton; Zezel; MacTavish; etc.), but I don't know if it would have been enough. I wish we got to find out.
@@raj2007ca That's fair. Fuhr was sensational that season. I remember he played an insane amount of games. Mike Keenan rarely called on Jon Casey. Damn, I wish the Blues had beaten Detroit. If St. Louis were able to get past Colorado, they would have won the SC. There is no way they would have lost to Florida.
Not true. This was a bad turnover by Gretzky and the shot was perfect. It was on Casey’s stick side and directly under the bar at 90 mph. It was the perfect shot at the perfect moment. Saveable? Yes, but OT is stressfull. Gretzky set Yzerman up and Casey wasn’t expecting a bomb from the blue line. A classic moment no matter what.
Certainly ruffled a few feathers in the locker room once the traded happened. Totally a Mike Keenan move probably. Nevertheless, they made the playoffs and pushed the Red Wings to the brink in that 2nd-round series before Yzerman finally ended that series in OT.
He certainly didn't play like that for the kings in has last years in L.A. I'm a die hard kings fan but I never really cared for gretzky, after he left the kings organization.
@@kozmeetorez yeah that's true, and he also wasn't involved anymore with the kings organization like he was with edmonton, when edmonton made that playoff run a couple of years ago. Rob Blake and luc Robitaille are still with kings organization, that is why to this day I don't own any of gretzky's jerseys.
@@kozmeetorez I remember seeing him in the stands for their first one in 2012 at a Kings home game in the Stanley Cup finals, and I remember someone interviewing him later on tv after they had won the cup and he sounded happy for the organization. I also remember seeing him and Mark Messier sitting together in the stands in LA during the Stanley Cup final in 2014 as well.
He still managed to finished first in points with the Blues 16 in 13. And with 21 pts in the last 18 games (including 8 goals), he was probably first too. So, it's not as bad as Brodeur
In the year Gretz left the Kings, it seemed like he was "Never" scoring goals ,..and his play sucked ,.. then he gets with bret Hull and Stl ,.. and it's like he's an Oiler again ???
Gretzky actually did better with the Kings than the Blues that season. With Kings: 81 points in 62 games (1.3 PPG). With Blues: 21 points in 18 games (1.17 PPG).
@@That90sShow - Mario Lemieux was also 5 years younger and still in his prime compared to a 36 year old Gretzky with a post-herniated thoracic disc injury…so colour me shocked lol.
