Continuing with my 'throwback time' series of re-edit older videos, this is a fresh look at my second Colorado backpacking trip, the South San Juan Wilderness in July 2012, with my son, Christian, and our dog, Jaden.
I recently published a long-overdue video of our first Colorado backpacking trip, the 2011 Zirkel Wilderness trip, and though that trip was a bit of a disaster from a planning and logistics standpoint, it did provide us valuable lessons that made the 2012 Colorado trip much more successful. We ended up doing about 40 miles over 5-days with a two day side-trip to take in the summit of 13,150-foot Conejos Peak. Along the way we had an excellent off-trail, bushwhacking day on the Continental Divide plus more 'off-trail' hiking on the way to Conejos Peak. There was also fishing in Blue Lake and the usual amount of camp and campfire fun.
This video is a great example of our early 'learning' trips, in which there was every bit as much fun and excitement as actual backpacking knowledge (perhaps more!). I really enjoy watching these early trips because at this point we had never experienced any 'lessons' that teach you that things can actually go wrong on backpacking trips in the Rockies! The learning was coming at us in 'firehose' fashion at that point, and that knowledge paid off in a big way in all of our later trips. But on this trip we were both basically Colorado Rockies backpacking newbies.
This trip was a long time ago and I had forgotten what an incredibly beautiful and special place the South San Juan Wilderness is. It takes some work to get there, but after watching this video I'm guessing you might just give some thought to adding it to your trip 'bucket list'.

This is way to cool! ! ! ! What a small world, my grandmother used to work at the Lamplighter back in the day. Never done any hiking in that area of CO. but other areas of CO we have done the same hikes. Kroenke used to be one of my favorites back in the 70's then here recently it was my daughter favorite hike.

My favorite area in Colorado along the Conejos River. Travelled 250 from end to end and all the way from Horca Junction to Del Norte. Thanks for this edition of your throwback series. Regrettable though that 2020 didn't let a lot of us create new adventures.

David , you have a talent. I really appreciate your work , both still and video. I also appreciate your loving attitude with regard to your family, two legged and four. It is interesting to watch you evolve over the life of your filming. I have some comments. After watching you with the two brothers and then the video in upper New York and then reading of the surgical procedure on your knee. After 20 years plus competing in Triathlons I have learned that hiking over rough terrain will kick your butt , no matter what shape you're in. I have also learned that it is tough to compete with youth. it appears to me that you know your limitations and let the kids go ahead. My concern is that you need an adjustment on your diet and your off season training. After you get the green light from your physician and your Orthopedist you might consider removing all delicious baked items from that bakery in Colorado . You might also consider removing all cerveza and other alcohol from your diet ( with respect to Joey). Using the rest room at fast food joints is ok but don't actually eat there. It is difficult to train while recovering from surgery but you might consider a Stair Master and /or a Peloton type bike. With just those few hints I'll bet you can drop 50 lbs. Put some fast music on and dream of the JMT. In a couple of years we will not recognize you until you sip your first cup of coffee. You're a good man David Gray Hike ON!

I remember the original video, great to watch a re-run remastered. Blue Lake is near the scene of a grizzly bear attack that almost killed Ed Wiseman back in 1951. If you're interested, there is a book written by Deb Carpenter Nolting entitled " Grizzly Attack in Colorado the Ed Wiseman Story ". It's good reading and very detailed on what happened 69 years ago. Apparently that was the last grizzly bear in Colorado. Christmas is just 3 weeks away so "Merry Christmas & Safe Holidays to the David Gray Family of Indiana " !!! Let's all hope for a Truly New Year that will be Safe for All of Us !

I’ve hiked quite a bit in my life. I’m in my mid 30’s with minimal debt. What do most avid hikers like yourself do for a living? I’m currently a banker but even with federal holidays I just don’t seem to have the time to just go wherever all the time? Any advice for career changes with anyone out there?
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 3 года назад
Well, I can't speak for everybody out there doing hiking/backpacking videos, but for me I had a pretty 'typical' full-time day job in automotive engineering. I was fortunate to have about 5 weeks of vacation every year (I'd been doing the engineering 'gig' for 35+ years so I had some decent annual vacation built up), but even with that it severely limited how many backpacking trips per year that I could do. Realize that I also had a full-on family that wanted to do some family time too so my vacation time was split between backpacking and other family vacations. For all of us that would rather spend more time in the woods, it seems to come down to balancing vacation time, family time, and (sadly) work time.

Nope, not a news person and haven't had much time on TV. The Dennis Quaid comparison has been made, especially from my 'younger' videos, but that's all I can think of. I used to get that comparison enough, both on youtube and in person, that my brother bought me the complete Dennis Quaid movie collection for Xmas one year as a bit of a joke gift.

Yeah, I know - sorry about the wind noise in some of the spots. This was in the days before I used an external microphone with 'dead kitty' wind noise suppressor. Wind noise isn't much of an issue in my older videos, except the ones in the mountains on the Continental Divide (tends to get a little windy up there!).
