SCETV's 1998 production, "When Rice was King," explores the history of South Carolina's rice plantations. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina was the state's main source of income during the two centuries leading up to the Civil War. The film looks into the process of how rice was made as well as what life was like on the plantations.

Gold rice is a thing of beauty. Those told to harvest it should have been properly paid as correct compensation. They should have been free and paid to work in this great and profitable feeding and profit.

I was visiting a plantation in South Carolina when I learned of this great and unique aspect of plantations.I can only lament that it wasn't accomplished by freed men and proper compensation to them and their nuclear families.

Precisely. Those folks had their labor stolen for centuries and just like anybody else who creates wealth, they deserve to have their inheritance passed to their descendants.

Having just published two books about the Santee River, and the early rice plantations from 1793 to 1866. Planning a trip there this spring as the area is filled with history.
