TC Electronic Tailspin - Ultra Slow Mod

HUGE Thanks to Tim from @Master Effects Pedals (www.mastereffectspedals.com) who helped me with this mod
I wanted my TC Electronic Tailspin to have a wider range of slower speeds, so with the help of Tim (from Master Effects) I came up with this mod. It just adds a cap on C18 (I used a 105j film cap to get ULTRA slow speeds - but you can use any value you want to get the desired results). I also added a mini toggle switch on the outside so I could go between the normal stock setting and the modded ultra-slow setting.

Thanks for this mod! Most pedals with slow vibrato have a hefty price tag. Tried modding the Behringer Vibrato but I didn't like the tone. I like my Marshall Vibratrem but it's still too fast at its slowest. Got a Tailspin en route to me now; TC owe you some kickback. 😅 Cheers again!

Your mod has convinced me to get one of these. I've never modded a pedal before, but this seems easy enough to do
@GuitarWithGabe

I'm no professional mod'er, but I'm familiar enough with soldering to accomplish it. If you're comfortable soldering, and have some patience then it's a really easy mod. Good luck!
@TheAnonymousBosch
@TheAnonymousBosch 3 года назад
@@GuitarWithGabe Yeah, I'm pretty comfortable with a soldering iron at this point, rewired my guitars plenty of times. I take it it's quite cramped inside the pedal? I'm wondering now if there's a way to modify to produce more waveshapes for the vibrato as well
@GuitarWithGabe
@GuitarWithGabe 3 года назад
@@TheAnonymousBosch The pedal actually opens up easy enough to gain access to the parts, and offers a lot of workable room. I'm not sure about how to go about the wave shapes idea, but that does sound cool!

Thanks for the info about the mod. I got my Tailspin secondhand, did the mod and everything is working fine. However, I still find this pedal a bit noisy. I read that one of the trim pots is a gain control, do you know if this is true? If so, which one is it? I'm thinking that maybe the previous owner messed with them (or they came from the factory like that, who knows), because in the demos I've seen the pedal doesn't make that much noise.
@GuitarWithGabe

I do see the trim pots in there, but I cannot confirm what they do. Sorry.

Could you please tell me which capacitor you used? I saw 105j in 400v and in 630v. Which one will work?

Tailspin is already a very underrated effect IMO but this mod is exactly the sounds/speeds I was hoping for when i first bought it. The stock vibrato rate is so fast that I never raise the speed beyond 11 oclock. I like the tailspin so much that I actually just bought an EQD Aqueduct as well for the wider speed range and of course the various wave shapes....the Aqueduct adds a little extra presence to the guitar tone and stacks fine with other effects too but there is a lack of analog warmth that the Tailspin delivers.
@GuitarWithGabe
@GuitarWithGabe 3 года назад
Exactly! I really liked the Tailspin tone so I'm glad I was able to figure out this mod to make it more usable. However, that EQD Aqueduct is no joke either - great pedal!

Is there any way to make the amplitude wider bc after the rate mod the depth control seems narrower in lower rate settings. Thanks!
@GuitarWithGabe
@GuitarWithGabe 2 года назад
Hmm, thats a good question. I haven't experienced that so I didn't explore that. But my guess would be to probe around (like I did to find cap that controls the speed) with another cap and see if you can find the cap that controls the depth? That's where I'd start.

Can I omit the switch altogether and just piggy back in parallel a 105 capacitor? I love this mod so much, I thick it should have come out of the factory this way. Or better yet, can I know the value of C18 and just replace it completely with the correct value capacitor of those two caps in parallel. Thanks!

@GuitarWithGabe
@GuitarWithGabe 2 года назад
Thanks for the interest. I'm not convinced it'd be all that worth it to pay me to do it though. The parts are cheap and it's a very 'doable' and easy to handle mod. Not to mention that the cost of shipping, plus parts, plus time would probably make it cost-prohibitive to want to pay someone else to do it. If I were to suggest anything, if you're uncomfortable with mod'ing, I would recommend finding someone local and asking them to perform this specific mod. It'll probably be cheaper. I hope that helps!
