Tchaikovsky - Album for the Youth Op.39

Tchaikovsky wrote his Album for the Youth Op.39 in summer 1878, following the example set by Schumann in 1848 with his Album for the Young. These are attractive small pieces of modest scope and ambition, full of Russian atmosphere, and actually I like this set much better than Schumann's. I recorded these on april 4, 2015 on my Gaveau grand, using a Tascam DR-2D recorder.
The images are predominantly Russian, and as relevant to the piece in question as I could find.

I loved the idea of making an album for the youth and these scores are delightful and a great tool for teachers to introduce them to the world of classical music (better than Schumann's, although I do like some of them)! I don't like all the pieces in this particular repertoire, but there are some real gems here, even for adults, that I would love to tackle in an improvisational way and perhaps even expand upon them. My teachers did not make these available to me in my youth for recitals and practice, so great to see them now, all these years later (I am classically trained). Other passages are perfect in their own simplicity, requiring nothing more than a good performance, just as you have done here. Add a good dose of passion and voila! You play very well with perfect execution and dynamics and this was a wonderful post! Thank you for taking your precious time to do this! I have subscribed Chris and pleased to meet you :-) ~Jackie

Harry Andruschak , 'easy' for whom ? Not for the majority of the population. If it were 'easy', why isn't everybody doing it? As for 'bothering with' or 'not bothering with'.....it is just like saying ': is it worth bothering with Tchaikovsky?'. That old dilemma, etc. Point is, if someone like Tchaikovsky or Schumann BOTHERED by writing this music, "bothering" with it goes without saying. Duh :) that it is easier to play than Chopin's etudes or Bach's fugues means nothing. It is like saying that a black and white sketch by Da Vinci is worth less than a colour painting, just because the latter has colours in it. The value lies in the substance, more technique does not necessarily add anything. To conclude : the argument :" it is easier, so is it worth BOTHERING with?" makes no sense. The question is: how good it is, not how difficult it gets. And again, there is nothing "easy" about these works, if they were easy, every fool would be buying a keyboard and play them, instead of playing videogames ....

I agree that ,this work of Tchaikovsky is much better than Schumann's "Album for the youth" ,at least in a way of expressing of grade rage of feelings and emotions from the childhood and youth.I am a piano teacher in a school and you gave me such good ideas for the students of our school. Tchaikovsky is a very emotional composer indeed, and one of the composers I love most. Whether he was "gay" in the sense we use it now, I'm not sure. I rather think he was a-sexual, and attracted to some male friends emotionally.

Buon ascolto a tutti! LA MUSICA È VITA, ...... E ANCHE SPERANZA. IL BELLO CI AIUTERÀ SEMPRE IN FUTURO!!! Buon ascolto!

Thank you for the feedback ! When I wrote that I preferred Tchaikovsky's Album for the Youth to Schumann's, I was largely ignorant of the latter. But even apart from that, the comparison makes little sense as you say. Since then, I have recorded Schumann's album as well, and come to appreciate and love it as much as Tchaikovsky's. We are lucky to have both.

Nice playing and ever so personal in the splendid interpretation - however in the last analysis lacking in the exciting interest given by say Igor Zhukov or better Michael Ponti in their performances; they excelled in faster tempi and managed to bring them off: A matter for the listener, maybe these pieces require restrained tempos for appreciation...
@ChrisBreemer
@ChrisBreemer 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback ! I admit not having heard either of these two pianist's recording of this opus. No doubt they would be better than mine. I would not think music like this was Ponti's cup of tea - he was never the subtlest of pianists. Zhukov I greatly admire (his Tchaikovsky 2nd is unrivalled for me) but perhaps he was too big a player for this intimate music. In the end, as you say it's a matter of personal taste.
@s1earle
@s1earle 2 года назад
@@ChrisBreemer So true, Ponti excelled in fast tempos and always, like Julius Katchen, tried to show off his exceptional technique-however in the more reflective pieces (like certain Scriabin preludes, solo Tschaikovsky piano music etc. and in particular the Tausig Op 3) he shines and, same as when I met him late 1970s in Newtown Sydney, he showed an almost "Arrau" attitude of shyness and reservation...

It´s ok, but - sorry to say - there are quite some fundamental flaws in your playing like the dynamic transformation of tension and relaxation - or some microtiming problems, to name a few. But recording your playing will help I guess.
@ChrisBreemer
@ChrisBreemer 3 года назад
Thanks. Yes, dynamics are always an issue in my recordings (as in most all non-professional recordings). It's partly the not too sophisticated playing, and partly the basic recording equipment which flattens any dynamic contrasts such as there may be. In my case, it's also the sluggish instrument which works against me - I'm doing much better since switching to a digital instrument. I'm not aware of any microtiming or other problems, though I'd be the first to agree that these are far from perfect, and that much more could be made of these pieces which are all too easy to underestimate.
@VirtuousPraiseworthy
@VirtuousPraiseworthy 2 года назад
Most of us are enjoying his playing and admiring how well he puts himself out there. By the way, I'm a trained pianist, and I have no idea what "microtiming" problems you'd be referring to. I hear a clear pulse and appropriate rubato. The playing is generally delightful. Nope, he doesn't record on a nine-foot German concert grand. I hope you find some recordings that are free from any possible criticism. I've never found any, personally, so I just enjoy the best of what I choose to spend my time on. Life's too short to do otherwise.
