Tchaikovsky could well have published the Concert Fantasia as his 3rd Piano Concerto... Many other composers concertos conform less to the standard three movement structure than the Concert Fantasia. That would push what's now known as his 3rd Piano Concerto to the 4th position (and that concerto's gestation is a whole story unto itself!). Tchaikovsky hit such a jackpot with his celebrated 1st Piano Concerto that it has always overshadowed his piano concerted works which follow -- to me, his 2nd Piano Concerto is a close rival to his 1st. And the Concert Fantasia is doubly handicapped by not having the full rank of "concerto". It certainly has the beautiful themes and length to qualify being called "concerto".

A Tchaikovsky le gustaba componer para el piano y la orquesta. Lo dice en sus cartas.

Beautiful work. I enjoyed the integration of piano and Orchestra. Having expressed himself magnificently with 2 piano concertos, I feel that Tchaikovsky was approaching this work in a slightly different manner. I have long admired this work, as with most of his output

Great performance of yet another beautiful and complex work of Tchaikovsky! Having listened to the first two piano concertos of Tchaikovsky hundreds of times, I was blown away when I first heard Concert Fantasia nearly 40 years ago. The style and melodic development seem different than his other two concertos. Sublimely beautiful melodies are complex and sound enigmatic and wistfully futuristic. In fact, I could relate bits of the score's mood and style to some works of French and Russsian composers of 20th century. But rest assured that Tchaikovsky's soul and capricious fury emerges now and then; especially at coda starting at 32:38, bringing this masterpiece to a breathtaking conclusion.

Mr. Rashit Nigamatullin is literally the only conductor that I have seen in video performances who conducts in a way that I can follow. He has an upward ictus, and I was taught to use downward (generally). I can live with it though. Other conductors are just mysteries to me.

@@Egobaldo It is true that this work is not among the best of Tchaikovsky but it is no less true that there are wonderful passages in it, especially in the second movement. An example is the transition between the first theme and the second where the new theme only manages to prevail the third time it try. I don't know of any other work by Tchaikovsky where something similar appears. Another magical moment occurs when in the re-exposition of the first theme, the second appears on the piano at the same time, as a counterpoint to the first. This concert fantasy is composed in the same spirit that the Suite number 3 op. 55.

No. I still think this is a very patchy work, definitely not one of his best.
@bowerdw

If Tchaikovsky's response to Rubenstein's criticism of the 1st Piano Concerto reflects Tchaikovsky's attitude, I would think the word "patchy" would light him up in regards to this piece. LOL! He might have been too self critical but from the little I know of him he didn't do well with criticism.

I agree. It's full of magnificent ideas, especially the endless cadenza. Pity as it could have been a triumphant piano concerto. I guess he had other masterpieces to knock out. To think that people used to sneer and look down their noses at him!

So boring.Ovchinikov has always been a fascinating pianist but why learn this balloned upnothing!Many composers write one violin or one piano concerto and never write a 2nd.Piotr wrote 3 and this too - but none of them are wellknown besides the unbelievable No.1.No.2 is not bad and its slowmov is unforgettable but this ConcertFantasia sounds like so many other lateRomanticScharwenka ,Martucci all5SaintSaens are terrific.there are hundreds of them and many are more interesting than this.

rip off of the nutcracker...
@josephahern5933
@josephahern5933 3 года назад
Interesting quip. Since it came before the Nutcracker, how could it be ripping it off? Also, how does it mimic or foreshadow Tchaikovsky's last ballet. I have listened to the Nutcracker constantly for over 40 years and don't see any rip-off moments. There is a flute solo in the beginning just like in the ballet's overture; is that it?
