Performed by the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Veronika Dudarova [from Melodiya C 04671-72] Thanks again to anotherglazunovfan for providing this recording.
Amazingly, this student work of Tchaikovsky has all the hallmarks of his orchestration that made his music immortally appealing. The second version for a larger orchestra with additional brass is even more a spectacular work. Both versions show how Tchaikovsky, even at an early stage, strove for perfection in blending of melodic rhythm and harmonies utilizing orchestra in such colorful way that had never been heard before.
Rodders, thank you for posting this rare under-performed and under-rated gem! It contains a wonderful early glimmer of his iconic orchestration techniques (score on IMSLP). I cannot even find a CD recording of this 1st 1865 version. It appears to exist only on vinyl and here on youtube? Much appreciated.
