Tchaikovsky - Piano Concertos Nos.1,2,3 / NEW MASTERING (Century's rec.: Emil Gilels, Lorin Maazel) 

Well, I would, unfortunately, disagree. Principally speaking, since 1980, performers and composers of Western art music have been irreversibly corrupted by American and English "pop" music -- and it shows in virtually all aspects.

@@pacz8114 Dear sir, you are completely wrong in your assessment regarding the statement of Western music since 1980. I can give you a long list of contemporary Western classical music composers writing brilliant symphonies, concertos, chamber music, etc., etc. Music not at all influenced by 'pop' music, but composers building on the foundation of centuries of European classical music tradition. If you are interested to investigate this yourself, I can give you names and then you can investigate it yourself. Just let me know, and I can forward you some names - my current list of contemporary classical composers composing truly fine classical music (and this EXCLUDES composers who compose so-called 'avant garde' music which now one can listen to except the composer and musicians who are paid to play it) is already beyond 30 names, and is growing every year. Following decades of fascination with formal Western art music, I have found little-to-no music written since about 1960 that appears to further the unique attributes of say a Bruckner or a Prokofiev (to name two outstanding composers); for my ears, the last of the truly significant composers were Howard Hanson and William Schuman.

@@pacz8114 Many years ago I used to think that no good classical music has been composed since the death of Shostakovich in 1975 and that only the so-called avante garde type of noise paraded as music has been the order of the day. Then I started to investigate the issue and have been greatly surprised by what I’ve found thus far. Actually in the past 50 years classical music has been composed in a wider range of styles than ever before. I am still busy with my investigation, which has been made easy thanks to a great platform like RU-vid. Here are the names of some composers that I’ve discovered thus far. Since you mentioned the date of 1960 I will focus only on composers who have composers most if not all of their music since that date. Some of them are composer’s whose music is quite conservative, yet excellent. Other are more demanding, but if you can enjoy the music of Bella Bartok or Bohuslav Martinu, or the intenseness and drama of for example Prokofiev’s 2nd symphony of Shostakovich’s 8th, then you should be able to enjoy most if not all of these composers. 1) Oscar Navarro (born in 1981) - Navarro is a film composer who uses that same style of composing to create wonderful classical music as well. His oboe concerto and 3 clarinet concertos are highly recommended. He also used music from some of his films to compose tone poems, with versions for full orchestra or orchestral bands. For example: 1) El arca de Noe, 2) Libertadores and 3) Expedition. Also listen to the extremely beautiful little gem for children’s choirs, called Suenis de sal. He is one of my favorite living composers. 2) Cortintin Boissier (born in 1995) - although I am still busy investigating French composers, I can already strongly recommend this young man, calling himself a Neo-Romantic composer, currently studying composing at the Paris Conservatorium . Most of his compositions available on RU-vid are for solo piano, but simply wonderful stuff, like his 2 piano sonatas and the Glamour Concerto. 3) Jaan Raats (born in 1932) - this great composer from Estonia is one of my favorite contemporary composer. However, off all the names I’ll be mentioning, his music may the most challenging for someone with a very conservative taste in music. Recommendations to start with: 1) His brilliant symphonies, most of which are on YT; 2) A number of concertos, including the excellent chamber concerto op 16; 3) The piano trios (nrs.2-7) are on YT). Then three brilliant composers from the small country of Latvia: 4) Peteris Vasks (born in 1946) - in my view there is no greater contemporary classical music composer than Vasks. A few recommendations to start with: 1) His 3 symphonies and 2) His concertos for various solo-instruments and orchestra (concertos for flute, viola, clarinet, 2 brilliant cello concertos, and his great violin concertos, named Distant Light and Lonely Angel). 5) Georges Pelecis (born in 1947) - a composer composing wonderful music in style very much his own, unlike any other composer I’ve heard. His beautiful music should appeal to any taste. A few recommendations to start with: 1) Blooming Jasmin, 2) Concertino Bianco, 3) 13th London symphony (his effort at continuing where Haydn stopped) and 4) Endorphin music. 6) Arturs Maskats (born in 1957) - this may also be a bit more demanding taste for some people, but I’ find his music sure delight to listen to. Recommendations to start with: 1) His excellent piano concerto - the premier performance of it in 2017 has been loaded onto YT by the pianist who premiered it; 2) Concerto grosso; 3) Midnight in Riga and 4) the Ballet piece, Tango. 7) Alexey Shor (born 1970) - composer with a very interesting history - Born in the Ukraine, attending University in Russia, emigrating to Israel, completing his PHD in mathematics in the USA where he and wife and kids are mostly residing- and then after all of this on his website he is called a MALTESE composer. Anyway, this mathematician turned full-time composer is composing absolutely delightful music that should appeal to any taste. You’ll find on his RU-vid site numerous recordings of his lovely concertos and solo-piano music. Then 5 Italians composers: 8) Lorenzo Ferrero (born in 1951) - a Neo-Romantic composer. Not that much of him on YT, but the few pieces I’ve found are excellent indeed. Recommendations: 1) Piano concerto, 2) The concerto for cello, violin and piano, and 3) La Nueva España, and excellent set of 6 tone pone depicting Cortes’s invasion of the Aztec empire. 9) Paolo Pessina (born in 1969) - another Neo-Romantic composer who has loaded a huge amount of his own music on YT. Recommendations to start with: 1) Chamber music like the piano trio, 2 violin sonatas & Mutationes Super Dies Irae Op.50; and 2) the Flute concerto. 10) Giovanni Alevi (born in 1969) - some may be surprised that I mention Alevi, since he is more known as a composer of music that I would describe as a cross between light classical music and popular music. However, Alevi has also composed two full classical concertos. Listen to his two extremely delightful and in my view excellent concertos, one for violin and the other for piano and orhestra. 11) Carlo Pedini (born in 1959) - probably my favorite contemporary Italian composer. Once again someone with very conservative taste may find Pedini’s music a bit challenging, but I think he is a great master of our time. Recommendations to start with: 1) Le Stagioni non sono più le stesse - a magnificent use of themes from Vivaldi’s 4 seasons; 2) Concertino a volo D'Angelo, 3) Schubert-concertino and 3) his piano concerto, called H2O. 12) Lastly, Paolo Ugoletti (born in 1956) - there are a number of fine concertos of him on YT. Sinfonia for string and Variazioni Sul Tema Della Follia are also excellent. There are many more names that I can add. I haven’t even mentioned the Russians yet. I have a list of at least 6 great contemporary Russian composers, that I can add later, once you’ve been through the above list. Furthermore, I only focused on living composers. There are quite a number of dead composers who also composed great music over the last 40 years. I would love to hear what you think about the music of these 12 composer’s that I’ve recommended. I have always fancied the French (late 1800s up to WWII), the Russians (late 1800s to Shostakovich’s passing) and a few Americans here and there; and while I'm always up for post 1900 music, it's the likes of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Berwald and Bizet that keep my heart -- with a certain Mr. Beethoven at the Apex. The 1951 live performance by Horowitz and Szell (NYP) is much more dramatic and exciting than this performance by Gilels and Maazel. Maybe because the Horowitz/Szell is a live performance, whereas the Gilels is probably a studio recording. Plus, Gilels seems to have played with too much caution in this performance, whereas Horowitz obviously "threw caution to wind" in his 1951 recording of this piece with Szell.

Unfortunately, it seems Gilels only recorded the Siloti version; I would love to have heard him do the original.

Really? I find that incomparable. "Brilliant Classics" are quite commercial and very superficial for my taste. Here you can hear some truly sophisticated and selected, refined repertoire. Almost everything CM/RR have posted was/is an event.

@@providence51 Hi, I haven't heard many recordings of Tchaikovsky second, but Pletnev's recording (which includes 1-3 piano concertos, concerto fantasie) is remarkable.

These were issued by EMI in the 1970's and were available on CD as a two disc set. They might be available now through Warner Music.
