This is a 4K TCL Roku television model 55S405 that has no picture or backlight; just a totally black screen and you can possibly still hear the sound. Most common problem with this 55s405, 55s401, and other models is a bad Led back light strip. In order to change the led backlight strip is first removing the TV screen. Some models will have an adhesive bond to the top of the main television screen. In order to remove the screen you have to remove the screen and the top diffuser screen bracket at the same time.

Great video of this fix for failed LED backlight strips. Judging by the number of videos on this subject for these years/models the LEDs were of questionable quality to begin with. Hopefully the replacements last a little longer than the original parts!

Found your first video a little a while ago ordered my strips,tester and suctions last night while disassembling the tv the top of the screen was glued, other videos I found showed running a thin card along the screen to pry it loose nonetheless I cracked screen before realizing I could of worked the screen loose leaving the top diffuser bracket attached. So today I found this video a day and $300 late(cost of new tv) but I appreciate your videos cause even after cracking the screen I feel confident in disassembling this type of tv again. By the way I changed all the led strips so now I'm gonna take the tv apart again and remove the strips and possibly sell them or see if I can return them.

Dude your video was great. It pays to watch the vid/follow instructions…put the screen down too early and ended up cracking it🤦🏼‍♂️ works fine now, just with a major crack..

Thanks bud, but after watching all that I think I'll just buy a new set, they're lowering the prices on 55" TCL Rokus at Walmart because of the "newer" type sets that are out today and they still make this one. This one I've had for 10 years+, or around there. Half the screen above has gotten darker so headin' to Walmart tomorrow. nice to have a video, but my family will never tolerate me tearing into the tv. I come from the days when I had to go to drug store on weekly basis to test/replace the crazy tubes. Now a days, this is far worse. But thanks for you information.

I got impatient and didn't want to wait to buy those suction cups...I (slowly) lifted up different sections of the screen and inserted a thin bed sheet underneath. Once I'd gotten the sheet completely underneath the screen, I used the sheet to partly lift, partly drag the screen off of the chassis and onto the table next to me. It actually worked pretty well.

Glad to hear this worked! I was thinking the exact same thing. Had my TV repaired last year for the same issue, but they've gone out again. So just going to try my hand at it this time. Worst case I have to buy a new TV 😁

I was gonna do that but decided not to risk it. On a 50 inch or so maybe would of, but 65 i didmt wanna risk lol alot more flimsy. I went to carquest got 2 suction cups for $20

Hey BigDog! You are the reason I've been able to start feeling comfortable repairing TVs in my free time and I appreciate you! I currently have a TCL 55S405 It just flickers on when I try to turn it on very quickly and when I light it up with the flashlight while it's turned on I can see what's showing on the screen And also the volume works I read on a forum before that if it does flash up brightly it could mean that it might not be an LED problem but it seems like just changing the LEDs will likely resolve the issue correct? Since apparently bad LED strips is a common issue with these series TCL TVs Right? I genuinely appreciate any response🙏🏽you must be a super busy guy

I was trying to fix a TCL 55 inch Hisense Roku TV because the backlight would blink once or twice and just stop. I replaced the backlights but that didn’t fix the issue. Could it be the power supply or what?

I had the same problem the output MOSFET is shorted replace it with a 500v 3a MOSFET also check the diodes on the positive lead and see if it's bad

So you're saying you typically don't replace all the LED's at once on these TCL tvs? I've done 6 of them, and what I have noticed is typically more than one led out, but I've always just replaced all the strips. I have been saving the strips though. Are you saying it's worth reusing old strips where none of the LEDs have gone out? I'm assuming you've done dozens, and trust your insight either way. Thanks!

I just got this same set in for the same thing but it didn't go well. While you made it look fairly easy to replace the panel back into position, I spent at least 45 mins trying to be sure I gently had it correctly situated including carefully checking the corners but after I fired it up there was a crack in the corner🤬 Has this ever happened to you ?? Freakin expensive lesson. PISSED ! What suction cups do you use? I tried getting a pair from Amazon but they were garbage. I was thinking about going to harbor freight. Looking forward to more course lessons when you get a chance to post.

Thanks for posting these videos with clear instructions and an entertaining commentary. I am most intrigued by how you replace individual LEDs instead of the entire strip set! I have the backlight problem with my TCL 65S401 TV. Can you tell me what is the voltage for the LEDs and where can I get them? eBay sells many 3V and 6V LEDs but the delivery time is about two months. Thanks for the help.

I have this same model too. Died after 3 yrs only... And based on the video views, 62 thousand other ppl have this problem also. Makes me angry that electronics are designed to die, so that you'll repurchase.

Good one BD check the output of that tester to see what it’s pushing out... I still use the older type without the controls I use a credit card to release the sticky it but move it like a saw to cut through it not by prying it up

I hook it up to my amp meter and it almost blew it up, the display started flashing and it was making noise. It measures a Max of 12Amps. Thats when I knew something was wrong. The checker also blew out another edge-lit samsung tv i had. What a piece of shiiii... lol

Will I be able to tell rather easily if my screen has the tape at the top? I have the 55S403 (Costco) version, maybe someone could chime in? I believe the S401 is Walmart and S405 all other retailers. Great videos, I’ll be trying the repair in a few days my biggest concern is cracking the screen if it’s taped at the top. Thank you!!

My TCL 55" TV (Model No 55S62A), just went blank, no video, no audio. Could this be a power supply issue or LED's. Is it expensive to repair, or would l be better off just replacing it

If there's no audio either, it's likely not the LED's...but you could try the flashlight test and see if it lets you see the screen. I would guess, at the very least, it's a loose connector...at the most, you may need a new board (and hopefully whatever killed the board didn't also kill the LED strips lol).

Are you talking about the front glass panel? Unfortunately, if you've cracked that, it will likely cost less to just buy a new TV.

I started to replace the backlights in a 55s405. and have lights from a 55s401 but it has 8 wires instead of four?// the s405 has black and red on one side of connector white and red.... s401 has black and red on one side. red and red on the other. then 4 white between those??

Thanks for the videos. Had a couple of questions,where did you get that prying tool? And I have a TCL 65" 65S4LEAA. I just bought it in November of 2018 and done went out. Was watching it last week and the screen just went black. The light on the bottom flashes when I push buttons and get sound but no picture. Every once in awhile when you turn it on you see it flash tcl on screen for split second then just back to a black screen. Sound like the strips to you? The process about the same for it? Appreciate any help. Thanks!

@@chieflookingglass, ended up just buying another TV myself. An LG. I heard not to buy these TVs on black friday like I did the first one as they mass produced them quickly to get alot out for the holidays and never last too long. But who knows.... I am sure it's just one of the bulbs to the backlighting went out causing them all not to work like Christmas lights do. I can take it outside in the sunlight or shine a flashlight on after turning it on and you can see the picture in the background really vague but it's there

I just replaced the LEDs in my dads. Everything works but when you look straight at the screen it looks dark but from the sides its perfectly clear and bright. Is there a specific order those defusers have to go back in? I'm thinking mine are not in the correct order.

Use the TV's model # and search online. Otherwise pull the strips out so you can see what it looks like and/or look for a part number on the backlight strips.

Unplug main board from power supply and plug in mains if the back lights come on they’re ok Next unplug mains, plug main board back in unplug t-con board plug in mains same result? Unplug mains and undo 1side of the screen driver boards plug in mains same result unplug mains, reconnect screen driver cable and repeat on the other side, same result ? Mainboard fault

Hello, I have a 55” TCL smart tv model 55s403,, I replaced all the led bulbs yesterday I put it back together I guess when I was taken the screen pane out with suction cups I damaged the too left corner and it’s like wrinkle looking and I have a 2 to 3 inch line running across the top but I can still see picture.. bit other than that after about 3 minutes the picture fades away and goes dark but I still have backlight.. I unplugged tv for 60 seconds plug it back in and it turns on fine , I have picture and then 2 to 3 minutes later does same thing picture fades away but still have backlight and sound..I Can you tell me please what can it be ,, thank you

this literally took him less than a hour , would’ve been less if he wasn’t doing a tutorial lol and the replacement parts are inexpensive lol you’ll be in 50-100 dollars. that’s worth it to keep from buying another Tv, i literally just did this in about a hour my first time after watching this . easy fix if you’re handy

I have a TCL that I just bought in November for the Black Friday specials at Walmart I play a lot of video games so I spend a lot of hours on it and recently it's been shutting off I've tried to unplug it for the 2 minutes unplug HDMI cords plug it back in nothing seems to work it'll stay on for like sometimes 10 minutes sometimes an hour and then it shuts off and keep shutting off for a while do you have a video on this 😊

Could be that something's pulling too much power, causing it to shut itself down. It could also be from dust/hair collecting and causing something to overheat.

I need help. I just replaced all the led strips...assembled everything back again. Found a few that needed to be replaced. Anyway...powering it up and its still no backlighting. Im so frustrated now. What else could it be? Everything powers on, sound, and using a flashlight I can see the image...but no backlighting

Late reply, but check all your connections and test the output from your power supply if you're able to. The problem is likely no power being output from the power board.

Possibly nothing...but if the power draw is too different, you could burn something out, or potentially get some smoke/fire...at the least, the LED's might just be dimmer than normal.
