We enjoyed editing 17 classic Italian movie intro's by the great Martin Scorsese in 2002. Working with TCM writer/producers Jean Franz and Charlie Coates we learned all about the "Neo Realism" movement in Italian cinema in a short time. We wish we could attach each of the films here too, but hopefully you can find them or Martin Scorsese's documentary "My Voyage To Italy" on FilmStruck or on RU-vid, etc.

I really enjoyed this film. It’s incredibly charming and bittersweet. Ultimately, at the end of the movie, when everything seems hopeless, Umberto realises what makes life worth living....the little things. A walk in the park on a beautiful day with your loving dog, children playing, people laughing, the smell of flowers on a light breeze etc etc. That’s what keeps you going!

On TCM on Max now. Phenomenal film. Great introduction. The professor’s natural acting is now explained. I was crying thinking about losing Flike and seeing that euthanasia chamber. That was hard to watch

'Ladri Di Biciclette' with a dog substituted for a bicycle. I find both films manipulative & unconvincing in their depiction of poverty. Is this really poverty compared to conditions in the developing world? Umberto is a self pitying character whose problems were not insurmountable, just as Antonio could've found alternative work without a bicycle. If you want an audience to be moved, put a little boy or dog in the film. Umberto D is an inconsistent & clumsy film. It begins with Umberto at the head of an anti poverty protest which comes to naught & is forgotten about, choosing instead to dwell on the personal problems of Umberto & the maid in sentimental fashion. The Japanese do sentiment so much better, 'Sansho Dayu' is devastating in comparison & Masaki Kobayashi's 'Magokoro' ( 'A Sincere Heart' ) may be the most beautifully made piece of pure emotional manipulation in cinema. Terribly overrated De Sica, much like his fan Bergman.

It’s just an opinion, you don’t say why. So, thanks for those useless words, really We deserve it! 😂🤣
