2024 saw an updated course from 2023 for the TCS Sydney Marathon. After my video of last year where I made 5 suggestions that were needed to get Sydney over the line to help its Abbott World Marathon Majors candidacy and become the 7th Major, it appears all these were taken onboard.
This year's event was vastly improved on last year and the 3 things that really stood out were
1. the start area and toilets.
2. the improved course, which appeared to have less hills, and
3. start time.
I still feel that the beginning of September would be a better time to have the marathon to avoid the potential of a heat wave like in 2023 but starting at 6am helped mitigate the chances of that happening. The marathon was also a week earlier than in 2023 to help avoid the potential for warmer weather.
The road surface was still in need of attention. Lots and lots of potholes that have the potential to people to fall and trip from and one section of road was so bad that they had put barriers up around it which subsequently they were moving when I got to that area at around 22kms due to people crashing into it I believe.
The start areas were set up to allow for larger numbers completely different to what we are used to in Australia but what you would expect from a Major or mass participation race due to starter numbers.
Look out for a cameo appearance from RU-vidr 'Dave the Runner'.
