Back with another tutorial, we install a straight through exhaust to the Td5. A straight through exhaust is arguably one of the best 'bang for your buck' modifications when it comes to Defenders, as it provides a fantastic exhaust note and more, for only £60.

Definitely recommend this modification. I did it with my old 2005 model along with a decat, the results can be heard on one of my videos... awesome!

Captain Clarke I remember watching it! That video was partly responsible for making me go ahead with this mod. I agree, I would definitely recommend it, it's cheap, makes a noticable difference to acceleration and sounds great (Just to name a few advantages!). I can't really see any negatives!

***** Haha it was great fun. The only downside I found with it was that on long journeys, it did 'drone' a bit in the cabin so a bit louder than before, but that was outweighed by the advantages! Towing a heavy trailer up a hill next to a wall to bounce the sound off is fantastic fun.

Captain Clarke I do a lot of motorway mileage and to be honest I can't really see a difference in noise as I'm just cruising at low revs in 5th. But yesterday however I was driving all over town running a few jobs, and driving through narrow city streets with that burble echoing off the buildings was just heavenly!

***** I guess it depends on how much sound insulation you have from the outside. Mine was originally soft top so there wasn't much to stop the noise! I also guess that with the catalytic converter on originally, that helped to 'deaden' the sound through the system itself below the cab.

@@TirsbaekTV How much difference would leaving the cat in compared to taking it out if you take the muffler/silencer out? I've heard a cat does not compression? but I'm not sure of this.

I am thinking of creating a second TirsbaekTV channel though for behind the scenes/less official content so I may post a comparison video on there as we have another Td5 with a stock exhaust still on it. is it the same process on the Disco 2? (2004 model)? someone told me the disco has sensors for exhaust gasses etc, so it would give errors when the original box is replaced with the straight through?

If you are talking diesel or petrol taking our a catalytic converter will mean your car will fail the MOT. It may void your insurance as well. The new regs currently mean the cat must be there. You could in theory take out the mid box and currently remove the EGR ( but keep the bits, there is a rumor that this may be a requirement in the future)

well after watching this video i can confirm that the fuel consuption indeed is lower (if driven slowly), and it also varies from defender to defender. Mine was a straight forward mount, i also did the one on my mates from wich the bolts were completely f*cked... a 30 minute job turned out to take 4-5 houres due to lack of material at the start. Also for those who wonder if a straigt pipe with a cat sounds nice? yes they do, it just isnt as raw but it sounds pretty angry as well.

@urbex2007 Idiot! If the turbo spools up at a lower rpm you don't need such a wide throttle as before. Less throttle means less fuel. You are correct regarding excess smoke though

Hi guys just watched your vid thinking of doing the same exhaust mod to mine (2004 defender 90 ) but what I'm interested in at the moment was the after market wheel rims on your landy, my tyres need to be changed ,so a rim size change is also a consideration, looking at yours I'm guessing that those rims are J8 x 20mm off set (et) with 265x85x16 have I got that right ?

+nope yep Thanks! Plenty more videos to come. All we did was replace the centre silencer box with a straight through, so no EGR removal.

+Hust HS Simply removing the catalytic converter probably won't create a sound as raw as this. You will need to remove the centre silencer box also. But be sure that removing the catalytic converter is within the bounds of the law in your country. (My Spanish is rusty, hopefully that answers your question)

Removing a silencer won't affect emissions. Only noise. Removing the cat may, but won't be a problem if you know a friendly MOT tester ;)

Nope. If yours is from 2001 onwards, it'll have a Catalytic Converter fitted to the exhaust, which I'm guessing is what's dampening the sound. You can remove it, but please make sure it's legal to do so in your country first.

great vid! thanks for uploading! now, I wonder.. is it exactly the same proces with a td4? I own a td4 1998 and I already have a decat exaust pipe. Is it possible to do the job with the same part you used? (your midpipe for a td5) pls help!

sony111111111111 Thanks. You can install this mod on a '98 Td4 yes, but the pipe is slightly different, not the exact same part as we used. You will need one made for the 300Tdi (Which I assume is the engine you're talking about) Although, you shouldn't need a decat, as that the 'cat' was introduced from 2001 onwards.

How does this affect interrior noise when doing 60 km/h on a motor way? Would love to cut mine out but afraid I can won't be able to travel far distances.

Personally I don't think it makes a difference when cruising, you have nothing to worry about.

It never had a cat, only models produced 2001 onwards do.

TirsbaekTV tnx! I’m getting a 2000 model next week. I’m not sure (anymore) but I believe the dutch models allready had a cat in that year... I will see next week and ask the tuner to make a wise decission.
