Great list. I also played El Grande for the first time about a year ago and loved what a pure area control experience it is. Definitely stands up even after all this time. As far as other area control. games go I (and possibly I'm the only person who feels like this) enjoy the Expanse board game . I recently played Wonderlands War which I enjoyed. . My favourite game of 2023 was The Last Kingdom, which has area majority with a couple of twists and I'd highly recommend.
Great list. I really need to try your number one and need to search for the app. My favorite area control games are El Grande, Ethnos, and Mission Red Planet. Have had and enjoyed them all for a long time.
There is the great area map game "Empires in Arms" on the Napoleonic Wars. I will have a friend come over this upcoming week to play a scenario with me. My favorite part of that game is the choice of operational chits.
Played Courtier again recently and absolutely enjoyed it!! I fear it doesn't appeal to the so-called modern gamer because ... reasons?, but I think it's a great and foremost fun game. Now to table Dominare at some point ...
What do you think about "Civilization" from Avalon Hill? For me, this is one of the best "area control" games. What I like especially about this game is the rulebook that came with the "Advanced Civilization" box. This is how rulebooks should be written.
Risk Europe is such a great AC/AI game, controlling the crown cities and large swaths of land to tax for money. I definitely think the AC/AI is just as important as the combat. Cave Troll and First Empires are also great games in this genre - I'd be interested in your opinion on those two, if you've played them.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer If you like deck building and area majority it’s a delight. I couldn’t care less about the theme but by the end of my first game I was whispering “I really wish he didn’t take my pink silk… now I won’t be able to make the pink and blue gown I envisioned!! What will my master tailor do with all this thimble! My work must be the highlight of the ball!”
Have you ever played Medievil Mechant. Mt 1st game i won bey accident not knowing strategy I won by going against the grain (what everbody else was doing). I like the game and it took place in Germany. I am German on my mother side so I wanted it. I do like the game it is a Euro. I think it was the 1st game I played with no dice. I am also a big fan of the AH series Storm Over Arnhem, Thunder at Casino, Turning Point Stalingrad and Breakout Normandy
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer its an older game Cities have different point values and if you have the most cubes in a city you gain the point for the city. There is mor to it than that but I had not played in a long time.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer it's very fun and has one of the best implementations of deck building I've seen. The theme is a tough sell to most dudes but everyone rally likes it after playing.
everytime I hear this, i have a smile on my face. I have played this a couple of times with people who have no clue about American politics of that period, and the game turned from a learning round in round 1 to a ruthless backstabbery from round 2 onwards :D
