This game has a reputation for long playtimes, and it really earns that rep. However! In my experience with both Relic and Talisman, people (myself included) tend to be too risk-averse before ascending to the inner tier. We played Relic a couple of weeks ago, and I knew I had the power to win... probably. But I was just one completed mission away from getting a second relic, and I had a character with awesome movement abilities, so I thought "what the heck, let's get it." It took another *hour* *and* *a* *half* for me to get to that last mission spot, move back to the inner tier, then advance to the objective and win. Part of that was that the other players were getting more powerful, corruption mechanics were making turns take longer, threats were piling up around the board... and I just rolled especially poorly for my movement. So that was on me. I could have ended it, but I didn't because I wanted to be just that little bit more sure. From now on I'm going to treat the game like the race that it is. :)

I've stolen so many games of Talisman and Relic from players who thought I didn't have a prayer when in reality, I did. I just didn't have a prayer, the bible, 4 priests in tow and a holy hand grenade just in case. Which is, I guess, stuff people think you need? xD

What if you adjust the starting values and start cards, basically start at a point further a long? I know you like Legendary as I was reminded by your shelf. Are you going to review the Legendary James Bond? I can believe that about King & The Dice Tower both horror shows.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer 5 лет назад
Ha! I'm sure you could "game" Relic to start further along, but I don't know how you do that to make it balanced since different characters get different rewards at different times. I'm sure you could figure out the math if you really wanted to. I'd love to review James Bond when it is available.

@mikejonesnoreally

I hope so for the sake of all the new players. Relic is great, but Relic with Nemesis and Halls of Terra is a completely evolved experience and even makes the game asymmetric and I feel might even make it faster like Cody was wishing during the first bit.

Not mechanically. Quality wise, there are new character sculpts, and thicker punchboard character and scenario cards.
@franciscoguerra5439
@franciscoguerra5439 4 года назад
Bear in mind that quality-wise, I rank the FFG models a lot higher than the WizKids one. They are not only more detailed, but simply look better as statue-like busts than as half-minis from the torso up. And the least said about the paintjobs, the better. WizKids pre-painted models always look shoddy as hell, and this is no exception.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer
@TheDiscriminatingGamer 4 года назад
@@franciscoguerra5439 I'm not a stickler for paint-jobs, as I do not paint myself. I'd rather have a "shoddy" paint job than no paint job any day of the week.
@franciscoguerra5439
@franciscoguerra5439 4 года назад
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Yeah, that's fair enough. I'm just constantly disappointed with the quality of WizKids components, which is a shame as I tend to quite like their games. Star Trek: Attack Wing, for example, was a *FAR* superior game to X-Wing, but the models, oh dear me, the models... and I don't just mean paintjobs (which were genuinely atrocious, especially earlier on), I mean stuff like an entire production run of K'Tinga Cruisers with the warp nacelles glued backwards, for example. When I contacted WizKids about it, they told me to just break them and re-glue them (thanks...). That complain of miniature quality, of course, doubles if you're making a game based on a license that is known primarily as a miniatures wargame, as it's a fair bet that a large part of the people who will buy that game come from that demographic. And on that respect, again, I was really underwhelmed with Relic. Spindly arms on the models, bent weapons, and an overall feel of "cheapness" to it that the gorgeous FFG sculpts didn't have. And paying extra to get miniatures that are really poorly painted is just a really weird concept for consumers of GW products (seriously, that poor sister of battle looks like a creepy, dead-eyed doll). Since I already owned the FFG version, this is a minor gripe, but I just hope this doesn't become a trend when/if WizKids reprints other GW boardgames like, say, Chaos in the Old World or Forbidden Stars. Now, if you're a boardgamer first, then of course this will not be a problem. But if you're a boardgamer who is also a miniatures wargamer (like me), then so far I have to say FFG handled these a bit better than WizKids has. Who knows, maybe they'll turn it around and blow everyone out of the water with a beautifully-produced reprint of the Horus Heresy! All this said, Relic is a great game, and it's great to see it back on the shelves. So there is that!

This is by far my favorite Talisman game. I have the older FFG version....the game board and artwork is phenomenal and I love the 40K theme. But....it's still Talisman. Yes, it's a long game but more importantly is the wild amount of luck and chance. Roll and move.....that's not a good game mechanism. Not only does it take forever to level up to win, while one person gets lucky and can level up....another might simply have bad dice rolls and stuck in the mud. This doesn't make for a fun gaming experience. There is little to no strategy involved. If you are a big Warhammer 40K fan, steer clear of this because it's a time-sucking board game based upon chance. If you are an avid board gamer, I can think of dozens of games that are more fun and won't ruin game night. I bought my version over five years ago for $10 shipped, brand new. I've played it only a handful of times.....well, because it's Talisman and overall not a very good game. Try before you buy or you are in for a universe of disappointment!

I understand your reservations. However, I believe that this is a game that some people will really get into, while others - not so much. This based on the games I've played and people I've discussed the game system with.

@@TheDiscriminatingGamer : There are no "reservations", I own this game! Unless the Wizkids version is vastly different, it's still the same game. Of the several people I taught and played it with, overall consensus was a mildly entertaining game at best! Sure there are some that may love it but the vast majority of gamers will probably play this once and say no thanks to a second helping. Be discriminating!

Perhaps you should actually read my comments before interjecting your beliefs on what you've perceived as my opinion. If you love Relic & Talisman....fine! Great! If you want to debate the issue, we can! But this is the typical reaction from thin-skinned clowns, like yourself, who's probably received a few "participation awards" that cannot handle any criticism at all. And it's wasn't even criticism directed at you! That's were your thin-skin makes you a clown, ready for make-up.

Games like Talisman and Relic are deceptive. They look like simple fun board games but in reality are rather complex RPGs. In games like this, it helps to at least be interested in the journey the other players are experiencing. If you just check out until its your turn again, you are sure to be bored. But what can you do, people like different stuff. Talisman is already a niche gamer space, and Relic I think appeals mostly to Talisman players who also like warhammer, but doesnt appeal to the tabletop warhammer players much at all. Sad really. The game is awesome. It's one of the few board games I've played that I haven't felt the need to make a full variant for.
